Shrewsbury – Antonio Agró, 93, of Shrewsbury, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Saturday, July 27, 2024.
Antonio was born and raised in Castrofilippo, Sicily, Italy. This is where he, his family, and most of the village people spent many hard-working hours tending to their farms to produce the most beautiful fruits and vegetables. Once emigrated to the United States, he kept to his roots growing various vegetables, tomatoes, and fruits including grapes, peaches, cherries, and fig trees.
Antonio fell in love with and married Maria Piraneo, also of Castrofilippo, on July 14, 1962; they just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary just a few weeks ago.
Antonio, his wife, and children crossed the Atlantic and emigrated to Brooklyn, New York in 1970 on the Italian cruise ship aptly named the Christopher Columbus. Once settled in New York, he worked for the NYC Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highways, as a highway repairer, repaving the streets of New York and most notable repaving the George Washington Bridge.
The Agró family moved to Shrewsbury in 1999, where they were faithful members of Saint Mary’s Parish.
Antonio leaves behind his beloved wife, Maria; their children, Charles J. Agró of Shrewsbury and Maria Teresa Gazaferi of Connecticut; two grandchildren Miranda of Connecticut and Ariana of Boston.
Relatives and friends of Antonio’s are invited to gather with his family for a calling hour on Thursday, August 1, 2024 from 10:30 – 11:30 AM at the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury followed by a funeral Mass at 12 NOON at Saint Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Entombment will be held privately.
