NORTHBOROUGH – The West Nile Virus has been detected in a mosquito sample that was collected on Aug. 8 in Northborough.
According to a press release from the town, the risk of West Nile Virus remains low. However, residents are encouraged to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and mosquito-borne diseases.
Avoid mosquito bites by applying insect repellent when outdoors; being aware of peak mosquito hours; and wearing long sleeves, long pants and socks to help keep mosquitos away from your skin. Additionally, people should mosquito-proof their homes by draining standing water and installing or repairing their screens.

Animal owners should reduce potential mosquito breeding sites by eliminating standing water, and horse owners should keep their horses in indoor stalls at night to reduce their risk of exposure.
WNV can infect people of all ages, but people over 50 are at a higher risk for severe disease. Most infected people will have no symptoms, but when present, symptoms tend to include fever and flu-like illness. In rare cases, more severe illness can occur.
