SHREWSBURY – Tim McInerney has been tapped to lead Shrewsbury’s Department of Public Works (DPW).

During an Aug. 27 Select Board meeting, Town Manager Kevin Mizikar announced that McInerney would become DPW director, a role that has been unoccupied following the departure of Jeff Howland on Feb. 2.

“Mr. McInerney has almost 20 years of public sector leadership experience. I think he’ll be a great asset to our public works team. He’s a great leader, and I think he’ll bring a unique perspective to help us problem solve and help us focus on very customer-centric-oriented solutions when it comes to our public infrastructure,” Mizikar said.

McInerney grew up in Lowell and served as town administrator in Grafton from 2009 to 2020. He briefly worked as Worcester’s interim director of inspectional services before becoming Northborough’s town administrator in November.

McInerney submitted his letter of resignation effective in October. Following the announcement, town leaders praised McInerney’s performance; Select Board Chair Mitch Cohen called him a “great partner” and thanked him for leaving the town in a strong position.

“These have been some of the most difficult days and the most stressful decision I have had to make,” McInerney said at the time of his resignation. “I am sad that I have to make this decision after a short tenure. There is no one reason for my departure; it is many. All are personal.”
