MARLBOROUGH – Steve Uliss, the owner and executive chef at Firefly’s BBQ on Boston Post Road East, died unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 22, at the age of 61.

Firefly’s announced his passing on its website.

“Steve was far more than a chef and entrepreneur: as a restaurateur, he was relentlessly innovative and resilient; as a community member, he was continuously engaged, fully committed, and constantly generous. His vigor, humor, love, and kindness will be sorely missed by all,” staff wrote.

The restaurant voiced its appreciation for the support received.

“We join with the Marlborough community to mourn the tremendous loss of Steve Uliss, owner and executive chef at Firefly’s BBQ,” said Meredith Harris, executive director of the Marlborough Economic Development Corp., in an email. “Steve was a brilliant culinary expert, a pillar in the hospitality community and always willing to give back and get creative. His passion drove his success and filled so many of our hearts for close to 25 years here in Marlborough.

“He was a valued member of MEDC’s Board of Directors, bringing his knowledge, expertise and love of the industry to our team every day. We will never forget his commitment to this community, friendship and smile. Cheers to you, Steve.

“Our thoughts are with the Uliss family, as anyone that knew Steve, knew that his family came above all else.”

According to the restaurant’s website, Uliss was born in Boston and developed a passion for food early on, including at his grandfather’s deli, Bluestein’s. He worked at Barnsider and was recruited to join the Northeast Motel Group before being approached by the Saunders family to help with their restaurants. He opened Firefly’s BBQ in 2001.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
