MARLBOROUGH – Now that the six-month pilot program with Modern Pest Solutions has concluded, the city’s Board of Health is considering the next steps to control the rodent population.
In February, Mayor J. Christian Dumais announced a program to deal with the rodents. From April through October, Modern Pest Solutions set up bait boxes to trap and exterminate them. According to Director of Public Health Paul Dinwoodie, 215 were captured and killed.

With the end of the pilot program, Dinwoodie said, “Now we’re just trying to look into alternative approaches that the city can take, just so we can have a baseline between programs.”
Dinwoodie said the city is looking into increasing public awareness, as well as trying other approaches such as ContraPest, a type of birth control for rodents.
The city will continue to take reports on sightings, and it will offer information on how residents can help reduce the population.
