NORTHBOROUGH – Northborough community members gathered for the fourth annual menorah lighting on Dec. 30.
Select Board Chair and member of the Jewish community Mitch Cohen shared the history of Hanukkah.
“The meaning of Hanukkah itself is to spread light. We light the candles of the menorah tonight to shine light on the darkness in all of its forms,” said Cohen. “Anti-Semitism has no home here. Nor does hatred of anyone for whatever their religion or culture or how they see themselves or where they came from or when they arrived.”
Rabbi Michael Swarttz shared a few words before saying a prayer over the lighting of the candles. He said the observance of Hanukkah is more than a historic commemoration.
“For the Hanukkah story is an enduring reminder of even when the odds seem insurmountable, faith and unity can prevail. It continues to inspire those who choose courage over fear,” Swarttz said.
After the menorah was lit, attendees were invited to enjoy jelly donuts and Hanukkah gelt along with dreidels.
