MARLBOROUGH – The tower at City Hall will remain wrapped in scaffolding for the next few months.

According to City Engineer Thomas DiPersio, the initial project — to re-point the brick, rebuild the interior stairs, copper work and other repairs – is almost done. The next step will be to renovate the clock faces.

He said this project should be completed by spring. After that, a separate project — roof and skylight repairs — will get under way.

Changes at Weed Street

According to DePersio, the Traffic Commission recently voted to make the section of Weed Street near the parking garage (from Court Street to the end of the new City Hall Plaza) one way westbound. The rest of Weed Street will remain two-way.

“This was done to make the plaza area narrower and more pedestrian-friendly,” he said.

The project to renovate the plaza was completed in September. The planters were removed, and the plaza was opened up to better accommodate events. There are also new benches and landscaping.

Grant acceptances

During its meeting on Monday, Dec. 2, the City Council accepted several grants, including $1,250 from the Marlborough Foundation to the Senior Center to help provide fuel assistance to seniors in need; $15,000 from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to the Marlborough Downtown Village Association to support the annual food truck and artisan festival; and $15,500 from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Association to Marlborough Emergency Management to be used for emergency preparedness.

The funds will go toward bedding, shelter support equipment and electrical upgrade to the gym circuits at Whitcomb Middle School to be on generator back-up. This upgrade is necessary to be able to use this facility as a shelter location.
