HUDSON — On Thursday, Jan. 9, Green Hudson will host a forum about its proposed plastic reduction initiative.
The event will go from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Union Hall in the Unitarian Church of Marlborough and Hudson located at 80 Main St. in Hudson.
All are welcome to attend to learn about the initiative, which will be the basis for an article on the May Town Meeting warrant that proposes the banning of Styrofoam containers and non-recyclable, single-use plastic food ware like straws and cutlery at food establishments in Hudson.
“The purpose of the forum is to inform business owners and residents of the details of the proposed ban and to receive their feedback. We have also requested feedback from the members of the Board of Health,” said Elisa Pearmain, a founding member of Green Hudson.
She said information concerning the harmful effects of plastic on people and animals has been increasing for the past 20 years, and more research has surfaced that demonstrates that microplastics have been found in the human body.
“We also believe that banning the use of Polystyrene foam and black plastic containers for takeout in Hudson will improve health,” Pearmain said. “Polystyrene foam and black plastic containers are known to leach plastics into foods placed in them … especially warm or hot foods.”
She added that Green Hudson believed it needs more time to do community outreach about its initiative, so the goal is to aim for a 2025 Town Meeting article.
