WESTBOROUGH — Despite an extraordinary, 30-point effort from senior captain Justin McCafferty, the Westborough Rangers fell to the visiting Shepherd Hill Rams, 48-46, on Friday night to move to 2-5 on the season.
McCafferty also grabbed seven rebounds.
“He put the team on his back today,” said Westborough Head Basketball Coach Brian Willar. “That was just a tough, tough high school basketball game. Shepherd Hill’s kids were ready — they had a couple big threes, a couple guys who hit shots on us … This was a tough one, but if we can play like that, give effort every night, I think we’ll be OK.”
The Westborough boys tennis team — which won the 2024 MIAA Division 2 title in June — unveiled its championship banner at halftime. The student-athletes also received commemorative plaques from Athletic Director Levi Hanson.
“It’s something that, every once in a while, I think about and reflect upon. This is nice, getting everybody back together — especially [last year’s] seniors, who are going back to college this weekend. It was nice to do this before they leave. It was a special moment,” said Westborough Head Boys Tennis Coach Len O’Neil.
O’Neil was recently named the MIAA Boys Tennis Coach of the Year.
“It was humbling. I didn’t really tell anyone. Once I won, I walked up to my wife, and I was like, ‘Hey, I won this.’ I think my wife was more excited than I was. The reality of it is that I won Coach of the Year honors because of these guys, not really anything I’ve done. I don’t preach individually, I preach team,” he said.
