GRAFTON – Route 140 near Browns Way was closed for much of the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 14, after an accident involving a Blackstone Valley Tech High School bus.
Around 7:15 a.m., police and fire responded to an accident with entrapment at 135 Upton St. (Route 140). Units included one engine, one heavy rescue, cars 1 and 2; several firefighters arrived in their personal vehicles and rendered immediate aid.
Fire crews used hydraulic tools to extricate the driver of the passenger car.
MedStar Ambulance tended to the driver of the passenger car that was trapped. A second MedStar Ambulance assessed the students and driver in the bus.
Both drivers were transported to the hospital by MedStar and Westborough Fire ambulances.
In a statement, BVT Superintendent-Director Michael Fitzpatrick said school administrators were at the scene shortly after the accident; they notified the parents of the students involved. Administrators also notified the students who were awaiting pickup so they could make other transportation arrangements.
Fitzpatrick added that the students were assessed and cleared at the scene by EMTs, and brought to school on another bus. On arrival, BVT nurses also assessed the students prior to sending them to class.
Counselors were made available for students involved in the accident.
“BVT is very grateful for the diligence and fast action of the first responders and the
Vendetti Bus Company, and the fact that none of the students nor the school bus
driver sustained serious injuries,” said Fitzpatrick.
Grafton Police closed the road, and are investigating the cause of the accident.
Upton Street has since been reopened.
