Westborough - Maria Bolf had never experienced homelessness. She said she worked all of her life, up until she underwent surgery and was unable to keep her job. Money got tight, and before long she said her family found itself choosing between paying bills and buying food. For the last two weeks, Bolf, her husband, and three of her children have been living in a hotel room in Shrewsbury, which is a long way from their former home in Fall River. They were placed there by the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance.

Westborough church group helps Pennsylvania residents in need

Westborough – This summer, 27 youth and seven adults, including parishioners from the Congregational Church of Westborough's Senior High Youth Group, traveled to Pennsylvania where they worked on a variety of programs to assist residents in need. According to one of the adult leaders, Art Sharkey, this was the eighth consecutive year the Westborough group has participated in a mission of this type. Over the course of the week-long program, the group split up to work at sites in Harbor Creek and Erie.

Marlborough Summer Lunch Program seeks donations

Marlborough - For the past nine years, more than 900 local children from low income families have received a nutritious lunch three times a week, through the Marlborough Summer Lunch Program. Without this successful program, these children, who receive free breakfast and lunch in the public schools during the school year, would be without food on a regular basis. Many eligible students receive the free food at the Marlborough Police sub-station on the corner of Lincoln and Broad Streets each Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Shrewsbury – Soon after starting as executive director of Shrewsbury Youth & Family Services (SYFS) last June, Terry Cassidy met with community leaders and heard the same comment repeatedly. "I kept hearing how surprised they were that so many people don's know what SYFS does," she said. She learned that residents are familiar with their modest building and its "SYFS" sign at 240 Maple Avenue, but unaware it's the hub of activity beyond that address.
