Hudson – Stormtroopers roamed the grounds around the Hudson-Concord Elks #959 Pavilion when the third annual Millennium 5K was held May 22. In its first two years, the “Star Wars” themed fundraiser helped John and Sheryl Marrazzo make their Hudson home become wheelchair accessible including an elevator for their son Jake, 13, a seventh-grader at David J. Quinn Middle School. He lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.

Children share Easter crafts with seniors

Shrewsbury – First-grade students from St. Mary's Parish gave back to the community by creating Easter-themed bookmarks with senior citizens at Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (SNRC) March 16. Shrewsbury High School students and sisters Erin, 14, and Meghan Kean, 17, also helped make crafts as part of the "Adopt a Grandparent" club. The children and seniors decorated the felt bookmarks with pastel-colored doves, stars, and crosses. Trish Cook, their religious education teacher, explained why she picked Easter-themed bookmarks instead of St. Patrick's Day crafts.

Community supports 26th annual Evening of Giving

Marlborough – Over 1,200 guests supported the 26th annual Evening of Giving, held Dec. 3 at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel. They sampled offerings from 29 eateries, then treated themselves to make-your-own-sundaes from Trombetta’s Farm.

Second annual Kane Charity Classic raises $51,000

Shrewsbury/Westborough – Held Aug. 15 at the Haven Country Club in Boylston, the second annual Hannah Kane Charity Classic golf tournament raised $51,000. The full day of activities began with a continental breakfast and concluded with a 19th-Hole Reception sponsored by Central One Federal Credit Union. There, state Rep. Hannah Kane, R-Shrewsbury, announced that the First-Place Gross Team Award was earned by a foursome of Central One staff members.

Willy's Kitty Angels Rescue helps strays find new home

Northborough - MaryEllen Richards, director of Willy's Kitty Angels Rescue, is on a mission: to help one stray cat at a time. For her and her team of volunteers, there are not enough hours in the day to accomplish all that they are trying to do. In 2007, Richards was living in the Dudley/Webster area and took on the task of trapping, neutering and releasing cats that she would find left behind. She would also take some of these felines to the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society in Springfield for their free feral Sunday clinics.

Marlborough moms create support group for opium addiction

Marlborough - In an effort to save lives through awareness and education, Marlborough moms Maureen Begg and Carol Pickford have begun an informal support group for those who are suffering from opiate addiction. The group, which is also for loved ones, first began meeting at Begg’s home in April. Recently is has relocated to the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3565, 56 Florence St., Marlborough. Meetings take place the first Tuesday of the month from 7-9 p.m.

Anti-prejudice youth group announces 2017 program

Shrewsbury - Students Together Opposing Prejudice - S.T.O.P. - has announced plans for its seven-week middle school program next February and March. Described as an anti-prejudice youth education and leadership initiative, the sessions address all forms of discrimination.
