City receives grant for ATV

Marlborough - An Emergency Management Program Grant (EMPG) for $18,435 to purchase an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) for use by the Conservation Commission, Police and Fire departments was approved the City Council at the Sept. 22 meeting.

All lives matter

Region – It has been a chilling and horrifying few weeks as the nation has watched police departments in Dallas and Baton Rouge come under attack and then face the devastating loss of multiple officers on their forces. There has been one silver lining amidst the sadness – citizens across the country, including here in our region, have come out en masse to show they support their local police departments. Gifts of cards, foods, visits and other gestures of support, officers say, mean the world to them. And in turn, they promise to continue to honor their vow to protect us, even if it means they must continue to put themselves in harm’s way to do so.

Storm now not expected to impact area

What a turn-around! From a crippling storm to likely a small accumulation and I wouldn't be surprised if there was only a dusting in our local area. There were a number of things that went wrong with how I thought this forecast would turn out and an error analysis has identified some of them.

Northborough resident trains for Pan Mass Challenge

Northborough - For midwife Dina Fraize, Mother's Day has a special meaning. In 1998, when Fraize was pregnant with her fifth child, her mother, Juanita Hayward, was diagnosed with colon cancer. Hayward, then 50, underwent surgery at UMass Memorial, performed by a Dana Farber doctor. "When my mother was diagnosed, my world came crashing down," Fraize said. "My insides felt like they dropped out of me. Mom was so young and had small grandchildren who were a huge part of her life. I just can't imagine being without my mom. She is my hero and my best friend. Everyone who knows her instantly loves her. She is so loving and nonjudgmental and kind."

Northborough Water and Sewer Commission to vote on rate increases

Northborough - The Northborough Water and Sewer Commission will vote on the proposed water and sewer rate increases during its Sept. 24 meeting, according to town officials. The commission held a public hearing on Aug. 27 to consider the proposed increases in water and sewer rates. Town officials are proposing a 20 percent increase in sewer rates, as well as a $10 base fee per household each quarter for water capacity. No one from the public attended the hearing to voice their opinion.

Student Leadership Council members gain tools for being good citizens

That’s according to Kayla Parsons, a fourth-grader at the Charles Jaworek Elementary School in Marlborough. She’s one of 18 students in her grade enrolled in the May session of the Student Leadership Council at the school.

Northborough selectmen thank interim fire chief

Northborough – The Northborough Board of Selectmen took time during its Jan. 25 meeting to thank Richard Harris who served as the town’s interim fire chief since last July. Harris, the former North Reading Fire Chief, served in Northborough while the town went through the process of seeking a replacement for longtime Fire Chief David Durgin who retired in June. David L. Parenti was sworn in as the new Northborough Fire Chief on Jan. 11.

Grafton – How do you encourage a new generation to learn a very old craft? According to Diane Racicot, the Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Grafton High School, you have students work with members of the local Senior Center. “I saw it [the Warm Up America program] on the Internet and thought it would be great for the Creative Crafts Class and the Family and Community Leader Club,” Racicot explained.
