Police create support fund for 5-year-old Grafton girl

Grafton - The Grafton Police Association has established a support fund for 5-year-old Sofia Sugarman (Connors) whose family recently suffered a tragic event. Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation to this fund can do so by dropping donations off at the Grafton Police Headquarters, 28 Providence Road. Please make all checks payable to the Grafton Police Association and indicate in the note section “Sofia Sugarman Fund.” The Grafton Police Association has pledged the first $1,000 to this effort.

Benoit is promoted at Homefield Credit Union

North Grafton - Kelly Benoit has been promoted to the position of vice president of retail banking and marketing at Homefield Credit Union. Lloyd Hamm, president and CEO of Homefield, was effusive in his praise of Benoit and the positive impact she has made since she joined the credit union in 1998.

Plan for new DPW building creates friction among selectmen

Grafton – At the Board of Selectmen’s Sept. 1 meeting, a vote on a proposed amendment that will come before the voters at the Monday, Oct. 19 Town Meeting led to the board questioning their support of a new Department of Public Works (DPW) building project.

Grafton selectmen schedule Special Town Meeting

Grafton - At the Dec. 15 meeting, Grafton selectmen tentatively set Monday, Feb. 8, as the date for a Special Town Meeting. Scheduled for a vote at the meeting will be an article asking voters to authorize the town to create an aggregate electrical supply authority.

Selectmen discuss ongoing issue of marijuana facility

Grafton - At the request of Selectman Dennis Flynn, on May 3 the Grafton Board of Selectmen again addressed the ongoing issue of licensing marijuana dispensaries and growing facilities in the town. Flynn noted that teen use in Colorado has increased 20 percent since marijuana was legalized there and that, according to recent research, regular use of marijuana is linked to lowered intelligence and poor school and work performance. He concluded by stating that with the advent of legal marijuana – to be smoked and eaten – its variable potency was especially troubling.

Suburban Group at One Grafton Common seeks rent relief

Grafton - Nancy Carlson, president of The Suburban Group job placement company, appeared before the Grafton Board of Selectmen March 1 to ask for rent relief. Her claim was that after seven months of ongoing construction and renovating at 1 Grafton Common, her business has been harmed and she has suffered a loss of revenue while incurring significant difficulties.

Evening of music to benefit Jeff Baskowski Music Scholarship

Grafton – Local musicians are rallying Saturday, May 7 at Hunter’s Grill & Tap at the Grafton Inn, 25 Grafton Common, to raise money for the Jeff Baskowski Music Scholarship. The night will feature music ranging from American roots to jump/swing. R&B and jump band Big Chief will headline the event, with other musicians to include Steve Beckwith, T.J. Peavy, Jeff Giacomelli, and Brad Kohl.
