Third Overdose Awareness Vigil gathers crowd in downtown Marlborough

Marlborough - The third International Overdose Awareness Day Vigil at the Walker Building in Marlborough ended on Aug. 31 with hundreds of attendees raising memorial candles into the sky as the voice of Godsmack’s Sully Erna echoed down Main Street. This year’s was the biggest event yet for organizer and advocate Kathy Leonard of Marlborough. Several hundred attendees came from across Central Massachusetts to hear more than an hour of speeches and a musical performance by Erna. Leonard organized the event to remember those lost to the opioid epidemic and destigmatize addiction.

Westborough 6-year-old excels in young golf career

Westborough - Soon-to-be 7-year-old Triston Krumsiek got his first set of plastic golf clubs for his second birthday. In the five years since then, he has upgraded to metal clubs, begun playing on full-sized courses, and joined a competitive regional golf “tour.” Learning the game of golf faster than many adults, Triston has impressed his parents and other golf mentors alike. While his parents said they do not want to push him to play a sport he does not want to play, Triston himself said he is excited about golf and the success he has had in his young golf career.

Northborough American Legion hopes restored tank builds community

Northborough - Gisele Giordano, the manager, function coordinator and treasurer for the Vincent F. Picard American Legion Post 234 in Northborough, has always kept an eye on the hall’s Cold War-era tank from her second-floor office window. Recently, however, thanks to an extensive restoration, she has also watched it gather a steady stream of visitors and invigorate the legion’s community. The tank came to Northborough in 1995, the same year the U.S. military officially demilitarized it. In the decades that followed, the town’s harsh weather stripped parts of its paint and caused streaks of rust to drip down its sides.

Shrewsbury family shares their love of books with others through their ‘Little Library’

Shrewsbury - The Siebels family, who live on School Street in Shrewsbury, moved to town about two years ago. Like many who are new to town, they wanted to connect with their neighbors and their new community and they found a really interesting way to achieve this while sharing their love of reading. They built their own Little Library that sits in their front lawn near the road.

Iconic Shrewsbury barn to be relocated to Boylston

Shrewsbury - High in its rafters, the Bonnie Dell Farm barn bears signatures of visitors dating back decades. 135 years after it was built, the barn, signatures and all, is being relocated to Boylston’s Spring Ridge farm where its new owners say they’re excited to save a piece of local history. “It’s very well preserved,” said Tricia May, a co-owner of the Spring Ridge Farm. “It’s just a beautiful barn.”

Andrew Swenson of Hudson to be remembered with concert

Hudson/Marlborough – Among the memories Hudson resident Zenaide “Zee” Swenson cherishes of living in a hospital with her son Andrew is his love for music. The nonprofit organization Andrew’s Helpful Hands (AHH) serves as a legacy for her son, who passed away of leukemia the day after his seventh birthday in 2002. His passions will be remembered Saturday, July 29, 4 p.m. to midnight, as AHH presents Andrew’s Memorial Jam at the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough.
