Hudson veteran honored for WWII service

Hudson – Lifelong Hudson resident Edward P. Karvoski Sr., an Army veteran of World War II, received the Legion of Honor Medal during Lafayette Day Ceremonies held May 18 at the Massachusetts State House. Incumbents win Hudson selectmen's race

Hudson – Incumbents Joseph J. Durant and James Dalton Vereault will retain their seats on the Hudson Board of Selectmen. The two received the most votes, 1,353 and 1,093, respectively, in the Annual Town Election May 14. The third candidate in the race, Michael T. Bloomer, received 671 votes. There will also be one new but familiar face on the board – Fred P. Lucy III, who won a special race to complete the term vacated by Santino Parente in 2011. Lucy previously served on the board for nine years. He received 901 votes to defeat John M. Parent and Cipriano S. Pinto, who received 715 and 250 votes, respectively.

Hudson voters approve funds for Assabet Valley Regional Technical School

Hudson – Hudson voters approved a measure at the May 7 Annual Town Meeting to allocate approximately $6 million for renovations for the Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School (AVRTHS). Built in 1972, ASVRTHS has reached the end of its 40-year build life and is slated to undergo a $63 million renovation, according to school officials. The only previous capital work done on the nearly 400,000-square-foot building was a new roof, installed in 1983.

Hudson - Who could imagine that something as simple and as small as a pencil could prevent a child from attending school? Yet in Malawi, in Africa, a student cannot attend classes unless he or she has a pencil. Malawi is among the world's poorest, least developed and most populated countries. Free education is provided only to those in primary school. However, the number of students significantly drops off after these first years for many reasons. Only 35 percent of children attend secondary school and only 44 percent of those reach graduation.
