After fire, Marlborough family grateful for kindness of community

Marlborough – On Oct. 19, 2014, the Wambolt family was attending church services at the Greater Grace Christian Church when a fire broke out at their Parmenter Road home. Since the family was not home, no one was injured in the two-alarm blaze, but sadly their three beloved Cairn terriers all perished in the fire.

Marlborough native fundraises to build school in Guatemala

Marlborough – Michael Tirpak, a 2012 Marlborough High School alum, is now a junior studying business administration at Daytona State College (DSC). He’s also learning valuable lessons in philanthropy. Tirpak has spearheaded a fundraising campaign with a goal of $13,000 to build a two-bedroom school in Guatemala with Hug It Forward. Joining him in the fundraising effort are members of the college’s Rotaract Club, Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Reconstruction of Simarano Drive is on schedule

Marlborough - Preliminary work on the reconstruction of Simarano Drive began in October 2014 and continued until mid-December when construction crews completed preparation work on the drainage system and related areas. City Engineer Evan Pilachowski noted he is pleased with the progress that has been made. “I expect the drainage system to be completed in early spring when workers will also prepare the earth and resurface and widen the roads – moving along to completion by the end of summer,” he said.

Sweats for Vets brings warmth, cheer to homeless veterans

Marlborough – For the fourth year in a row, Sweats for Vets made the holidays warmer and happier for local homeless veterans. Started four years ago by Marlborough resident Mark Vital, the nonprofit organization has a simple mission – to give the veterans a gift of a sweatshirt featuring the name and/or logo a Boston sports team as well as warm hats, gloves and socks. Vital, himself a veteran, is currently a teacher at the Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School (AMSA) in Marlborough. As such, he has obtained the support of the school’s students, families and administration in his quest to collect donations. Other community members made donations at designated collection spots throughout the region.

‘Addicted To Laughter’ comedy show to honor memory of Marlborough resident

Marlborough - Friends and family of popular Marlborough resident Justin Clement, who died unexpectedly in March at the age of 32, are organizing a comedy show to raise funds for a scholarship in his honor. The show, titled “Addicted To Laughter,” will be held Thursday, Jan. 29, and will feature two up-and-coming headliners Mark Normand and Joe List.

COA receives gift for new senior center

Marlborough-The Marlborough Council on Aging (COA) has received a gift of $1,000 from Cummings Properties Employee Directed Giving Program to be used for the new senior center that is currently under construction at Ward Park. In a communication presented to the city council meeting at its Jan. 5. meeting, Mayor Arthur Vigeant stated that the generous donation will be used to purchase two ping pong tables, a sound system for the exercise room and supplies at the suggestion of Jennifer Claro, COA executive director.
