Marlborough - For the past several months, officials from the city of Marlborough and the town of Sudbury have been working closely to evaluate the potential benefits of combining resources to better serve veterans in their communities. Leading the effort is Mayor Arthur Vigeant, who, via a communication to the City Council during its Feb. 24 meeting, presented a proposal to move forward and regionalize.

Public Service Internship Program to continue in Marlborough

Marlborough - Mayor Arthur Vigeant has asked the City Council to continue the formal Public Service Internship Program for deserving college students and high school graduates. The program was inaugurated last year. In his communication to the council at its Feb. 24 meeting, Vigeant said he welcomed any feedback or questions relative to the program. He also included statements of overwhelming support from participating department heads and their staffs.

Tax work-off program praised by mayor

Marlborough - Reliability, enthusiasm, promptness and a willingness to do whatever is needed are among the positive attributes displayed by the 25 seniors enrolled in the city's first Senior Citizen Residential Property Tax Work-off Program (SCRPT). This was emphasized in Mayor Arthur Vigeant's first annual report on the SCRPT program presented to the City Council during the council's Feb. 11 meeting. A total of 49 applicants were deemed eligible for the program, and 25 seniors from that pool were selected through a random drawing, Vigeant said.

Volunteers help more girls attend high school proms

Marlborough – For several years, hundreds of girls attended their high school prom properly dressed in an outfit they otherwise wouldn's have been able to afford. They received the gown and accessories free of charge at an annual event, which was originally organized by faculty members of Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School (AVRHS). The tradition will continue Saturday, March 2, at AVRTHS as the Metrowest Princess Boutique is hosted for the third year by the Marlborough Junior Woman's Club (MJWC). Over 100 volunteers are happy to assist that day, said MJWC President Theresa Frias.

Boston Scientific expansion program to start in April

Marlborough - Groundbreaking for Phase II of Boston Scientific Corporation's expansion program in Marlborough is scheduled to begin in April, Mayor Arthur Vigeant said in a communication to the City Council at its Feb. 11 meeting. This will fulfill the second phase of the city's existing Tax Increment Financing (TIF) agreement with the company that was adopted and agreed to in 2006, he said.

Residents ask to reverse decision on Ward Park for Senior Center

Marlborough – The City Council accepted, but otherwise did not act or comment on at its Jan. 28 meeting, a communication from a group opposed to a proposal for a new Senior Center. Residents and landowners of the Ward Park Neighborhood Association are appealing to several city agencies and commissions to reconsider the decision to locate the new center at Ward Park. The group, led by Paul Brodeur, stated in a communication to the City Council, "We believe that the deeply divisive decision to locate public buildings on badly needed park space should only be made after broad community discussion and consent."

Marlborough residential taxes see small increase

Marlborough - Following a public hearing during its Dec. 18 meeting, the City Council approved a measure to raise taxes for residential properties and decrease taxes on commercial and industrial properties. Each year, prior to the mailing of third-quarter tax billings, the City Council holds a public hearing to determine the percentage of the city's property tax levy to be borne by each major property class. Marlborough has a dual tax rate – one for residential and one for commercial/industrial.

Funds for new Marlborough Senior Center design approved

Marlborough – The City Council unanimously approved at its Dec. 3 meeting $500,000 to fund costs associated with design and engineering plans for a new Senior Center to be built in a section of Ward Park, off Granger Boulevard. Ward 3 City Councilor Matt Elder, who had previously requested a neighborhood meeting in the area to allow his constituents to express any concerns prior to moving forward with the project, said he would not hold up approval of the funding. He added that he is planning to still hold the meeting next week with Mayor Arthur Vigeant in attendance.

Marlborough power outages to be studied

Marlborough ?Sporadic power outages in several parts of the city prompted the City Council at its Dec. 5 meeting to ask for a study into the matter. Ward 1 Councilor Joseph Delano, the chair of the council's Operations and Oversight committee, suggested the council bring together representatives from National Grid, as well as state and local officials, to discuss the outages.

“Festival of Trees” continues growing in fifth year

Marlborough – An idea introduced in 2008 added 17 decorated trees to the Marlborough Historical Society's annual "Christmas at the Farm" at their quaint headquarters, the Peter Rice Homestead. That simple idea has grown to become this year's fifth annual "Metrowest Festival of Trees," now featuring over 100 trees and wreaths displayed along with other attractions at the 47,500-square-foot Best Western Royal Plaza Trade Center.
