Local triathlete competes for friends battling cancer

Marlborough - Marlborough resident, businessman, author and Team USA triathlon athlete Mike McCombs is a two-time national champion in NCAA Division II swimming, an All American for his age group for the last two years, a national aquabike champion in 2012, and a qualifier for the 2013 and 2014 World Triathlon Championship. But his proudest achievement is biking, running and swimming in the name of his two friends battling cancer, Jim DeWitt and Tim Mathis. McCombs has competed in several major triathlons and always wears the name of DeWitt and Mathis on his helmet and bike.

Councilor Richard Jenkins introduced the proclamation at the request of city resident Leo Agnew, state commander for Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Leaves and Yard Waste Disposal in Marlborough

Marlborough - During October and November, Marlborough residents who have vehicles with sideboards will be allowed to dispose of leaves and yard waste at the Resident Drop-off Facility, 856 Boston Post Road East. This will allow a greater vehicle capacity, as long as the vehicle has the proper sticker. Should multiple trips be necessary it is important to notify the security guard.

Councilors to act on new senior center at Oct. 21 meeting

Marlborough - The decision to approve funding for Mayor Arthur Vigeant's proposal to build a senior center at Ward Park and make improvements to the park will finally be made by the City Council at the Monday, Oct. 21, meeting. A heated discussion on the loan order/bond request for $6.5 million at the Oct. 3 meeting of the council's Operations and Oversight Committee, chaired by Councilor Joe Delano, resulted in the committee voting to send the request back to the full council without a recommendation.

City departments earn $1.1 million in grants

Marlborough - Mayor Arthur Vigeant announced to city councilors the receipt of more than $154,000 in grants for the Council on Aging (COA) and the Police Department at the Oct. 7 council meeting. The new grants come on the heels of a $64,000 award, and the application for a $1.2 million road construction grant the mayor announced less than two months ago.
