Marlborough City Council approves budget

Marlborough - The City Council approved a spending plan for next year's city budget at $132.1 million at its June 3 meeting. Councilors agreed with the recommendations of the Finance Committee, cutting just under $742,000 from Mayor Arthur Vigeant's proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2014. Finance Committee Chair Michael Ossing said the final total is an increase over this year of $5.4 million, or 4.3 percent. The average amount of budget increases adopted by the council the past seven fiscal years is just under 3 percent. The budget for FY 2013 totaled $127.1 million.

Fighting stigma in wake of tragedy

Marlborough – Michael "Mikey" Emerson Maloney is remembered by his friends and family as someone who loved to cook, talk politics, care for animals, play the guitar and listen to the Beatles, Pink Floyd and other music of that era. Tragically, he passed away on March 20 at the age of 24 after a prolonged battle with depression and social anxiety disorder. On March 29, over 200 people packed into Speakers Night Club in Marlborough to reminisce about a young man who many considered a "tremendous kid."

Council considers cuts to mayor's budget proposal

Marlborough - A public hearing on the proposed fiscal year (FY) 2014 municipal operating budget, as recently submitted by Mayor Arthur Vigeant, was held during the May 20 City Council meeting. A review of the $132.92 million proposed spending plan reflects an increase of 4.89 percent over the approved FY 2013 budget. The Finance Committee, chaired by Councilor-at-Large Michael Ossing, is proposing a cut totaling slightly over $700,000 from the plan, after a series of review meetings with city department heads.

Memorial Day parade planned in Marlborough

Celebrating Grandparents Day with lots of family ties

Marlborough – Founded in1910, Immaculate Conception School (ICS) is steeped in history and traditions. One of its most popular events is Grandparents Day, which began in 1984. This year, 175 grandparents of students in preschool through fifth grade gathered May 3. Activities with the special guests in each classroom ranged from games to arts and crafts. Among this year's guests were Carol and Eugene Mauro, who visited their twin grandsons, fourth-graders Nathan and Thomas Crisafulli. Another grandson, Owen, is an ICS seventh-grader. Carol and Eugene now reside on Cape Cod and look forward to Grandparents Day, where they can also see other family members. Third-grade teacher Martha Mauro is their daughter-in-law; married to their son, Dan, an ICS alum. This was the 13th time Carol and Eugene visited for Grandparents Day as guests of seven grandchildren. Their nine children also attended ICS.

Region – Guests had the opportunity to meet state officials while attending the 33rd annual Senior Conference, held April 18 at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School (AVRTHS) in Marlborough. For the fifth year, the conference was hosted by state Sen. Jamie Eldridge, D-Acton, for constituents from 14 communities in the Middlesex and Worcester District, including Hudson, Marlborough, Northborough (precinct 3), Southborough and Westborough.
