(Photo/Bonnie Adams) By Bonnie Adams, Government Editor Marlborough - A neighbor's persistence, a mayor's vision and the hard work of a local Eagle Scout candidate and municipal employees and volunteers have all paid off as the city of Marlborough officially opened a new trail on Lake Williams Oct. 18. The new trail, which is approximately one- mile long, starts in a small area adjacent to the Marlborough District Court, across from Williams Street. It then skirts along part of Lake Williams before it loops back to the start.

DPW to take over Marlborough's Memorial Beach management

Marlborough - The City Council voted at its Oct. 15 meeting to transfer care, custody and management of land at Memorial Beach to the Department of Public Works (DPW). Memorial Beach is used extensively to provide swimming and boating lessons by the Recreation Department. The DPW will be performing extensive site work on the 10-acre beach including improving the beach area, renovating the concession stand, and making upgrades to the play area.

Multi-functional development proposed for former HP site

Marlborough - A proposal to rezone and redevelop the 109-acre former Hewlett-Packard (HP) campus located on Forest Street into a district that would allow for commercial office space, retail shops and restaurants, a hotel and residential units was presented to the City Council Oct. 15 during a public hearing. Atlantic Management of Framingham is proposing to change the former HP site to a mixed-use overlay district that would allow for multiple use that it claims is the current trend in suburban commercial real estate development, as many companies today prefer to provide employees the option to live, work and play in one area. The former HP location is adjacent to the buildings recently purchased by TJX.

AVC hopes to reach agreement with Marlborough for Bigelow School

Marlborough - The City Council considered a request at its Sept. 24 meeting from Mayor Arthur Vigeant to allow the Assabet Valley Collaborative (AVC) to lease the former Bigelow School for the next 25 years for the Assabet Valley Collaborative Alternative School. In June, Vigeant sought and received approval from the Marlborough School Committee to turn the Bigelow School over to the city for municipal use. The building had been considered as a possible site for a new senior center.
