Marlborough city departments earn $64,000 in grants

Marlborough - Mayor Arthur Vigeant announced to the City Council in a communication at its Aug. 27 meeting the receipt of grant awards of more than $64,000 for programs and equipment across three agencies. The Police Department will receive $45,000 from the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. The grant will help fund the Jail Diversion Program, a cooperative effort with Advocates, Inc. The city's Council on Aging has been awarded two $5,000 grants from Bay Path Elder Services, Inc., one to provide for continuation of educational and enrichment programs targeted towards Portuguese and Latino populations, and a second to enhance the city's scheduled senior transportation services to area retail locations.

Marlborough - Mayor Arthur Vigeant announced to city councilors the receipt of more than $154,000 in grants for the Council on Aging (COA) and the Police Department at the Oct. 7 council meeting. The new grants come on the heels of a $64,000 award, and the application for a $1.2 million road construction grant the mayor announced less than two months ago.

Councilor-at-large seat to remain vacant

Property development sites proposed by mayor

Marlborough-Mayor Arthur Vigeant would like to expand the number of properties designated for economic development under the provisions of Chapter 43D, a little-known state law that provides grants and incentives for these properties. At the Aug. 24 City Council meeting he asked Councilors to approve the designation of four parcels of land to the list of applicable properties – 15, 17, and 25 East Main St. and 15 Sawin St. The proposal was referred to the Urban Affairs Committee for study.

Mayor asks council to approve new Senior Center funding

Marlborough – Mayor Arthur Vigeant has requested that the City Council approve bonds totaling $9.5 million for construction of a new Senior Center and for renovations at Ward Park, where the center would be located. The request was made via a communication to the council at its Aug. 26 meeting. Vigeant asked the council to approve two bonds - $6.5 million for the center's construction and $3 million for the renovation of the courts, fields and parking at Ward Park.

The city of Marlborough has set up three cooling center for residents searching for relief from the oppressive weather. The centers are located at - Marlborough Police Station Lobby - 355 Bolton St.; Marlborough Council on Aging Auditorium - 250 Main St.; and the Marlborough Hospital- UMass -157 Union St. cafeteria until 7 p.m. and lobby until 8 p.m.

Public hearing date set for mayor’s FY16 budget

Marlborough - Mayor Arthur Vigeant presented the fiscal year 2016 budget to the City Council at the May 4 meeting, requesting $143.2 million. It was referred to the Finance Committee for review and recommendations. A public hearing has been set for the Monday, May 18, council meeting. The new budget is 4.5 percent higher than this year’s financial plan, said Vigeant in his communication, emphasizing it is “the result of a collaborative, data driven process involving each of our department heads.”
