Sandy-related information

Region – Here's information to help you ride out the rest of the storm and beyond.

MEMA, local officials prepare for ‘Frankenstorm’

Region – Although it is still not 100 percent certain how Hurricane Sandy will affect New England, local and government officials are not taking any chances as they set plans in place to deal with what many are calling "Frankenstorm." Last year's two storms – Hurricane Irene in August and the October nor'saster – left much of the state dealing with prolonged power outages, downed trees and wires. Governor Deval Patrick and his administration are doing their best, they said, to ensure that does not happen again this time.

Region prepares for ‘Sandy’

Region - No one who experienced last year's Hurricane Irene or the late October nor'saster will forget what it was like to be without power, heat and all the other conveniences of our modern lives. Now it appears Mother Nature is sending an anniversary gift of sorts to the region – Tropical Storm Sandy - which is projected to hit early next week, almost to the day of when last year's Oct. storm slammed into central Massachusetts.

The C.A. six tips of the day for Oct. 18

Region - Today is Thursday, Oct. 18, the 292nd day of 2012. In a World Series game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on this date in 1977, "Mr. October," aka New York Yankees outfielder Reggie Jackson, hit three home runs in a row off of three consecutive pitches from three different pitchers. On this day in 1767, English surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon completed their survey of the boundary between the colonies of Pennsylvania and Maryland as well as areas that would eventually become the states of Delaware and West Virginia. The men did so at the behest of the Penn and Calvert families, to solve a land dispute. On this day in 1998, 700 people died when a pipeline exploded in Jesse, Nigeria. The cause of the explosion, which resulted in a massive fire that burned for nearly a week, was never determined.

HYPE9 kicks off food drive to benefit local pantries

Region - Each fall, the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce holds a food drive to benefit the food pantries in its member communities of Grafton, Northborough, Shrewsbury, Southborough, and Westborough. Last year the chamber collected over 10,000 much-needed items in a one-month period. When the members of the chamber's group for young professionals, HYPE 9, read a recent Community Advocate article about the dire shortage that local food pantries are currently experiencing, they knew they had to do something about the situation. So they decided that they would kick off the 2012 food drive a month early. And they hope that members of the communities will join them in helping their fellow neighbors who are still struggling with the devastating effects of the slow economic recovery.

Westborough student teaches English in rural China

Westborough – Westborough High School student Melissa Zhang spent last summer at a rural school in China, teaching English to the local children. They ended up teaching her some important lessons as well. Here is her firsthand account: People say that the world is getting smaller. Technology is constantly changing and reshaping our society. I do agree with these statements, but I spent my summer in a very different place on the opposite side of the world, where technology is almost a foreign language. Here, I learned to be strong in times of adversity and enthusiastically explore new cultures. Haojiping Ethnic School is a rural school in Hunan Province, deep in the mountains of China. United Planet, the volunteer organization that brought me there, has helped thousands of volunteers go to more than 40 different countries. I heard about the program from Michelle Cheng, a fellow Westborough resident. We decided to go together and ended up being the only volunteers from Massachusetts. I spent my summer in rural China teaching English to Chinese children and it was one of the best choices I'se ever made.
