Helping the homeless in Northborough, Westborough

Northborough – Cars pull up and unload. People scurry into Julie Stanwood's Northborough home carrying bundles of clothes, shopping bags of toys, and packages of diapers. The living room is overflowing with donations. Stanwood is president of the Friends of Families in Transition, Inc., (FFIT) which is committed to assisting homeless families in the towns of Northborough and Westborough. Her mission is to coordinate the efforts of various community groups to work together to support the families who are provided with temporary housing in area motels.

Northborough BOS say National Grid still has room to improve

Northborough – Although the response by National Grid regarding the town's needs after Hurricane Sandy was better than its response to the October 2011 storm, there is still room for improvement. That was the consensus of Town Administrator John Coderre and the Board of Selectmen at the board's Nov. 5 meeting. Selectman Leslie Rutan said she received a number of complaints from residents regarding National Grid's post-hurricane services. She said that residents expressed concern that Northborough was one of the last towns to have power restored in the area.

Northborough – As part of the 50th season of the Northborough Art Guild, longtime members greeted exhibitors and guests to its 49th annual Craft Fair, held Oct. 27 at the Peaslee Elementary School cafeteria. Admission for guests was still only 50 cents. Diane Lyford, a guild member for 20 years and vice president for 10 years, understands the interest in the venue.

Northborough - When Dina Fraize became pregnant with her third son, she hired a doula (professional labor support/coach) to provide emotional, physical and informational support during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. The word "doula" comes from ancient Greek, meaning "woman's servant." Having a doula proved to be a wonderful experience for Fraize and her husband who hired a doula for their next two pregnancies. Following the birth of her fifth son in 2001, Fraize decided that she, too, wanted to offer other women the same encouragement and support that her doula had given to her.

Paving in Northborough center has started

Northborough - The Northborough Board of Selectmen discussed the paving of Route 20 that was scheduled to take place Oct. 16 through 18, among other road construction, at the Board of Selectmen meeting Oct. 15. During the past week, the laying of a shim coat, a coating to fill up the base of the existing pavement, was to be executed on Route 20 only; no side streets were paved. The final coat will not be executed until the spring of 2013.
