Northborough family values duty, honor, country

Northborough - After attending Loyola University for two years, 2010 Algonquin Regional High School graduate Daniel Polanowicz decided to forgo another year at the traditional college. Instead, he decided that being an officer in the military was his calling, and that West Point was the best place to pursue his goal. He gained admission to the elite academy, one of the most prestigious educational establishments in the nation, which boasts astronauts, generals, business leaders and even U.S. presidents as graduates. The United States Military Academy at West Point ranks fourth in the nation for its production of Rhodes scholars, so by any standard, it is a significant accomplishment to gain acceptance to the school.

Women's group helps other women better their lives

orthborough – As chair of International Outreach for the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) of Massachusetts for a two-year term starting June 2010, Northborough resident Fran Warren stresses the group's focus on helping women and children throughout the world. "We'se mostly trying to develop the skills, the knowledge and opportunity for children and women to better themselves and to help raise them from the dire poverty they live in in their community," she said.

Corridor Nine to utilize “chip timing” for this year's Applefest 5K

Northborough – The Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a 5K road race Saturday, Sept. 15, as part of Northborough's annual Applefest celebration. The route for this year's race, the 19th one the chamber has sponsored, will once again be along the scenic roads of Northborough, starting and finishing at the Marion E. Zeh School, 33 Howard St. But runners who have participated in past years will find one major difference this time - electronic "chip timing" will be done by 3C Race Productions.

Northborough selectmen address restaurant issues

Northborough – At its Aug. 20 meeting, the Northborough Board of Selectmen discussed issues about three restaurants in town: Zem Han, Chen's China Moon, Inc. and A.J. Tomaiolo's Italian Restaurant. The board unanimously approved a common victualler's license for Zem Han Restaurant for premises located at 4 West Main St. The restaurant will feature a variety of Mediterranean cuisine from Spain, Turkey, Italy, Greece and other Mediterranean countries.

Fireworks to cap this year's Applefest

Northborough – It may only be early August, but plans for Northborough's annual festival, Applefest, have been heating up. And in spite of the downtown construction, this year's festival, to be held Sept. 13 to 16, promises to be just as much fun as prior years, organizers promise.
