Boroughs Y offers kids a healthy dose of fun

Westborough – Summerlike temperatures April 29 attracted throngs of families to the annual Healthy Kids Day, a free event open to the public at the Boroughs Family Branch YMCA in Westborough. The morning was packed with a full schedule of family-friendly activities, both inside the facility and outdoors on its grounds.

Shrewsbury basketball teams take two from Algonquin

Shrewsbury – The Shrewsbury High School Colonials boys and girls basketball teams defeated the Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks in back-to-back games played Jan. 20. The Shrewsbury girls squeaked by Algonquin 47-46 in the first game of the evening. Both teams stayed within several points of each other throughout the game and traded off sharing the lead. Algonquin senior Emily Carens was the overall top scorer of the game with 19 points, and junior Caroline Leonard contributed 12 points. Junior Hailey Moore was the top scorer for Shrewsbury with 16 points and senior Abby Joseph added 9 points. The Shrewsbury girls improve to 5-6 on the season while the Algonquin girls fall to 5-5.

Grafton Police host 12th National Night Out locally

Grafton – For the 12th year, Grafton residents and visitors joined thousands of communities nationwide Aug. 1 by celebrating the 34rd annual National Night Out. The event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and locally by the Grafton Police Department.

Shrewsbury celebrates Lakeway Commons grand opening

Shrewsbury – State officials discussed the expected economical contributions of the new mixed-use development Lakeway Commons in Shrewsbury during its grand opening ceremony Oct. 21. Yet, they emphasized the importance of memorializing Spag’s, the iconic bargain store that had occupied the location at 193 Boston Turnpike from 1934 to 2004, and its owner Anthony “Spag” Borgatti, nicknamed because of his love for spaghetti.

Hundreds ‘gobble wobble’ on snow-lined course

Southborough – Hundreds of runners and walkers worked up a Thanksgiving appetite Nov. 27 by participating in the eighth annual Gobble Wobble 5K Road Race and Two-Mile Walk, beginning and ending at Trottier Middle School. Despite recovering from a snowstorm that morning, most of the 1,172 supporters who registered did participate. Only the Kids Fun Run was canceled.
