Shrewsbury – Although there is still a long way to go and it is not at all a certainty that it will happen, an affirmative step was taken towards a major renovation project for the Shrewsbury Public Library at the Oct. 30 Special Town Meeting (STM). After hearing pros and cons, Town Meeting Members approved a request to transfer $50,000 from the $250,000 library improvement study account to pay for more planning of development and repairs. Laurie Hogan, chair of the Library Trustees, gave a presentation in which she argued for the transfer as part of what the trustees believe are vital repairs needed for the town library. In the works since 1998, she explained that this project could expect to receive a $7.9 million provisional grant from the state's Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners next year. (That money is conditional; the voters must approve a plan for funding the remainder. The project was stymied last year when the voters defeated an earlier version of the improvement proposal at the ballot box.)

Shrewsbury - The Shrewsbury Public Library was recently transformed into a voyage on the Titanic for 80 lucky "passengers." Ticketholders holding "steerage" and "first class" tickets enjoyed a walking tour through the library, which had been transformed into different rooms of the Titanic in commemoration of Archaeology Month, which was October. The tour, designed to educate and immerse the visitors in the Titanic's history, appealed to a broad range of adults and children who were able to step back in time to 1912. "Since 2012 is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, a tour seemed a good fit," said Sharon Martin, Head of Children's Services at the Shrewsbury Public Library.

The article requested allowing the construction of a solar energy facility at the landfill located at 620 Hartford Turnpike as well as petitioning the Board of Appeals to issue a special permit for the facility. A discussion was held regarding an article which asked voters to approve amending an existing waste and landfill operation agreement with Wheelabrator Millbury, Inc. (WMI). Shrewsbury – Town Meeting members will convene at the Oak Street Middle School Tuesday, Oct. 30, for a Special Town Meeting (STM). There are 14 articles on the warrant up for discussion, including a request to approve rescinding a $600,000 bond authorization to fund design work for the new Sherwood Middle School project. According to documentation from Town Manager Daniel Morgado, the bond authorization was established at the direction of the Massachusetts School Building Committee to fund costs associated with design work for the new school, but the authorization was never used.

Shrewsbury – The Board of Selectmen discussed at its Oct. 9 meeting the addition of an article to the Oct. 30 Special Town Meeting (STM) warrant regarding funds for renovations at the town's public library. Town Manager Daniel Morgado suggested that such an article would authorize the Library Trustees to spend as much as $50,000 of the approximate $250,000 the town has budgeted for library renovations on definitive schematics.

Shrewsbury - At the top of the policy statement discussed by the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen (BOS) at its Oct. 9 meeting is the assertion that the board will not seek a Proposition 2 ? override during the 2013-2014 fiscal year. Instead, Town Manager Daniel Morgado urged the selectmen to ensure that budget recommendations from the BOS stay within the town's existing levy limit. The exception would be an article on the 2013 Annual Town Meeting warrant to pay for an unanticipated disaster or state of emergency.
