Athlete's Spotlight: Shrewsbury High School junior Samantha DiReda

"My favorite part about playing hockey is skating. Most other sports involve running. Hockey's different, it's not like any other sport. Not many girls can say they play hockey, and that might be the best part about it."

It's a dog's life for one Southborough woman

Southborough - While residents throughout town spend their weekends at ballgames and going on bike rides, Barbara Black can be found training her dogs for disc dog shows and competing in flyball competitions. Black, a garment decorator and promotional products distributor, has three dogs - her "fur kids" - two Border collies, Whit and Trim, and one Jack Russell Terrier, Secret. All of the dogs participate in flyball competitions. Whit and Secret perform in disc dog shows throughout the year at venues such as the Quechee Vermont Hot Air Balloon Festival, the Pet Rock Festival in Worcester, and other country fairs and events in southern New England as part of the New England Disc Dog Shows.

Algonquin Regional lacrosse team plays for more than a state title

Northborough/Southborough - The Algonquin Regional High School boys lacrosse team has high hopes for the 2012 season. Last year they made it all the way to the Division II State Final before losing to Medfield. This year the Tomahawks are hoping to take that extra step, and, with a 6-0 start, they are well on their way. This year is different however, because the team is also playing to honor the memory of a young Southborough student who passed away in January.

Athlete of the Week: Algonquin lacrosse standout Conor Healey

"I started playing lacrosse in 4th grade, and with a club team in 7th grade. When I was younger, I played baseball, but then I tried lacrosse and fell in love with the sport. I thought that lacrosse was more fun than baseball, because it was more fun and action packed. My sister also played lacrosse and I watched many of her games."

New athletic team at ARHS “unifies” students

Region - On a beautiful spring day in Northborough, students assembled on the athletic fields outside Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) for track-and-field practice. "Try and be more explosive when you throw it," Nishant Joshi, a high school junior and team member, said as he coached fellow teammate Nathaniel Nahabedian, a freshman, on the shot put. "Keep your hand about right here. Good!"

Athlete of the Week: Marlborough senior Jason Levine

"I'se had both a special coach and teammate during my time at MHS. My first coach freshman year was Tom Leopre, and his coaching style was unique and unparalleled by any other. A compliment from him was always a rare commodity, but that only made kids want to work harder to earn one. When kids would come off the courts during a match, he would sternly ask, "Do you know what you'se doing wrong?" in his signature voice tone, and if you didn's know the answer to that question, you's receive a detailed explanation. As for a particular teammate, my doubles partner Yuuki Sato has always had my back for the three years that we'se played together. He would always know when I wasn's playing to my full potential, and would let me know. We'se always been within one spot of each other on the ladder, so hopefully that will keep me on my toes this year, and push me to my full potential."
