Southborough Community Fund awards $30,000 in grants

Southborough – Founded in 2014, the Southborough Community Fund (SCF) awarded 10 grants totaling $30,000 in its first year. SCF is one of three town funds formed within the Foundation for MetroWest (FMW), of which Judy Salerno serves as executive director. “One of the things the foundation does is assemble a group of people in their community to work on building local resources,” she explained. “We serve 33 cities and towns. We recognize that not everyone identifies with all of MetroWest; they do identify with their individual town, such as Southborough.”

Central One spreads random acts of kindness

Westborough – On Feb. 20, a cold, blustery Friday morning, several people out and about in downtown Westborough got a warm and unexpected surprise, courtesy of Central One Federal Credit Union. That morning, the bank’s Westborough branch manager, David Kaiser and assistant branch manager, Rajani Kodun, visited several local establishments and paid for such things as breakfast, haircuts and groceries.

Benefit rock concert supports public school music education

Shrewsbury - Blair Drummey and Abrahim Rouabhia, two recent Shrewsbury High School graduates, organized Rock-it to the Moon, a benefit rock concert, July 1 at the Scandinavian Athletic Club [SAC]. At Rock-it to the Moon, six bands - Tuna and the Wongs, Living Relics, Skewed Visions, The Top Floor, Acetyline and Vostok 6 - performed for the love of music and to keep the Worcester Public Schools music program alive.

Local students awarded scholarships

Marlborough - Members of the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce (MRCC) gathered at Wayside Racquet and Swim Club June 6 for its Business After Hours annual scholarship presentation. The MRCC, through the Marlborough Regional Community Foundation, Inc., awarded five $1,000 scholarships; Wayside Racquet and Swim Club awarded two scholarships totaling $1,500; and Hologic, Inc., awarded a single scholarship for $2,000. Marlborough-based Hologic, Inc., is a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of diagnostic products, medical imaging systems, and surgical products, with an emphasis on serving women's healthcare needs.

Westborough family to host MS fundraiser

Westborough - Tom Smith grew up in Westborough with his brothers Paul and John and his sisters Mary (Cullen), Marguerite (Kerr), Sharrie (Grady) and Jean. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross, taught at the US Naval Academy (retiring as a commander) and then retired as the director of information technologies at the Mass Educational Financing Authority (MEFA). Tom was diagnosed with primary progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2006, a battle he lost in 2011. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, his daughters Heather, Heidi and Meagan, their spouses and his granddaughters.
