Hudson Recreation hosts well-attended 18th Pumpkin Fest

Hudson – Residents and visitors sported autumn layers on a brisk Oct. 17 when Hudson Recreation presented the 18th annual Pumpkin Fest at Morgan Bowl. Five hours of family fun featured lots of refreshments and activities offered by over 30 nonprofit organizations, live entertainment, sculpted balloons by clowns, pony rides, inflatable amusements, trackless train rides and fireworks.

Southborough celebrates its 42nd Heritage Day

Southborough – The center of Southborough was bustling with activities on an unseasonably warm Oct. 13 for its 42nd Heritage Day Celebration, organized by Southborough Recreation. Festivities began the previous evening when the Southborough Rotary Club presented the 17th annual Light-Up Southborough. Over 250 carved and decorated jack-o-lanterns were still on display along Common Street for visitors to view before the parade.

Observing Fire Prevention Week in Marlborough

Marlborough – The Marlborough Central Fire Station hosted a fun and educational open house Oct. 10 in observance of National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 4 to 10). While adults collected fire safety literature, children watched videos and live demonstrations, played in an obstacle course and got behind the wheel of the department’s emergency vehicles. They and their families were treated to pizza, ice cream and popcorn.

Team Vikki plans new benefit for breast cancer walk

Marlborough – Vikki Crowley of Marlborough and her Team Vikki (formerly the Sunflower Girls) continue fundraising year-round as they prepare to participate in the 14th annual Just ‘Cause Breast Cancer Walk, a three-day, 60-miler. Walk proceeds go to the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Center for Breast Cancer in Boston and the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden in Harvard.

Grant provides funds for senior fire safety in Southborough

Southborough - According to the National Fire Protection Association, people age 65 and over are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires compared to the population at large. But thanks to a grant from the state’s Senior SAFE program, residents at the Colonial Gardens complex now have a stovetop device installed in their kitchens that will help in case a fire breaks out on their stoves.

Fashionable additions planned for remembrance fundraiser

Hudson – Fun, fashionable additions are planned for the fourth annual Miles and Smiles for Michaella, a 3.2-mile memorial walk scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, beginning and ending at Morgan Bowl in Hudson. Proceeds go to the Michaella Walsh Libby Scholarship Fund, which is awarded to students who share her interest in community service or will major in a health-related field. Donations are also contributed to Kids Power and Students Helping Honduras (SHH).

Lobel entertains chamber breakfast with insights into New England sports scene

Westborough – Bob Lobel, one of New England’s most iconic sportscasters, was the guest speaker at the Sept. 24 breakfast meeting of the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce held at the Doubletree Hotel. Over the course of an hour, Lobel regaled the audience with his humorous and insightful opinions on the state of the region’s four major sports teams. As a sports director and anchor for WBZ-TV in Boston, Lobel had interviewed and covered virtually every major team and sporting event in the region. He has also had successful radio shows and now has a new television show, “Legends with Bob Lobel.”

Westborough Cultural Council hosts seventh Arts in Common

Westborough – Ideal autumn weather Sept. 26 contributed to a successful seventh annual Arts in Common presented by the Westborough Cultural Council at the Bay State Green. Throughout the six-hour arts festival, 22 acts of all ages performed music, dance, theater, comedy and poetry on two stages. Over 35 artisans displayed and sold handcrafted items. Refreshments were available from local eateries.

Spirit of Shrewsbury Parade features 100 marching units

Shrewsbury – The 19th annual Spirit of Shrewsbury Fall Festival Parade featured a record high number of 100 marching units travelling the 1.1-mile route downtown Sept. 27. Honored as grand marshal was Mahesh Reshamwala, riding in style in a 1971 Pontiac LeMans Sport convertible with his wife, Ketki. He’s an active volunteer at the Shrewsbury Senior Center and life member of the India Society of Worcester.

Hudson dedicates Cellucci memorial outside Town Hall

Hudson – The life of former Gov. Argeo Paul Cellucci was celebrated Sept. 20 in his hometown as the Hudson Rotary Club invited family, friends, colleagues and residents to attend the dedication of his memorial parklet in front of the Town Hall. The memorial features two granite benches with inscriptions, one of which reads: “His life was dedicated to the principle of public service and the people of Hudson were forever in his heart.”

Polito reflects on a busy first year as lieutenant governor

Shrewsbury - It’s been nine months since Karyn Polito officially became lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, serving with Gov. Charlie Baker. The Shrewsbury resident previously served in various roles in that town’s government and then as commissioner of the Massachusetts State Lottery from 1999-2000 and as state representative for the 11th Worcester District from 2001-2011. After losing a close race to Steven Grossman for state treasurer in 2010, she worked in her family’s commercial real estate development firm until winning the November 2014 election with Baker.
