CEO to fundraise by bicycling for Big Brothers Big Sisters

Shrewsbury – When Jeffrey Chin of Shrewsbury began as chief executive officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest in 2013, he also joined the agency’s team for the Rodman Ride for Kids. Now, he’s preparing for his third ride in September and a fundraising kickoff party in July. “I certainly ride recreationally on vacation, but don’t necessarily consider myself an avid cyclist,” he acknowledged. “In preparation for this event I do try to get on the bike two, three or four times prior to that weekend. The course itself isn’t especially tricky for a novice cyclist.”

WYFS ready for ‘Hot Summer Nights’

Westborough – The Westborough Youth and Family Services (WYFS) kicked off their Hot Summer Nights program June 19 with an ice cream giveaway for teens finishing their last day of school in front of the Forbes Municipal Building. Gibbons students make ‘change’ for kids with cancer

Westborough – We all have it – spare change. Pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, just tossed into our bags, jars at home, and in our cars. Sometimes we roll it up and deposit it into banks, other times it just collects. But recently, the students at the Sarah W. Gibbons Middle School in Westborough put all of their spare change to a very good use. And thanks to that, children fighting cancer, including one of their own classmates, will benefit.

Grafton nonprofit gives homeless dogs a second chance

Grafton – The famous cartoonist Charles Schulz once wrote “Happiness is a warm puppy.” Bay State Dogs, a Grafton-based nonprofit, would almost certainly add that it’s also a warm dog – of any age – in need of a second chance. With its mission to rescue and find good homes for Massachusetts canines, it’s been busy spreading that happiness to people and their furry new companions. Martha Palermo, who founded Bay State Dogs in 2011, is a dog trainer who has been passionate about helping dogs for years.

Marlborough man establishes fundraiser to help victims of Nepal earthquakes

Marlborough – On March 15, Marlborough resident Lee Miller traveled to Nepal where he spent time trekking through two connected areas - the Manaslu Circuit and the Tsum Valley. He returned home to Marlborough April 15 – 10 days later Nepal was rocked by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that killed more than 8,800 people and injured more than 23,000. On May 12, the region suffered another huge earthquake, this one a 7.2 magnitude.

Northborough woman ‘shines the light’ for girls in Kenyan villages

Northborough - Shine the Light Kenya is a nonprofit that was founded in 2011 by Lizzie Maina to help educate children in rural schools and ensure that they have the necessary tools to succeed. Having relocated from Africa to the United States in 1995, Maina immersed herself into the community and her passion for helping others. Her grandfather started a school in Kenya and she has committed herself to continuing to help those in the surrounding communities. She currently works as a senior caregiver in Worcester and enjoys spending time with the elderly.

Shrewsbury couple to celebrate 70th wedding anniversary

Shrewsbury – It’s been said that love knows no bounds, whether life’s challenges lie in age, health or distance; true love can conquer all. There is one such love story going on in Shrewsbury between Lawrence and Frances Laganelli, who will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on June 30. Although health issues have caused both to move a little slower, their love continues to give them strength. The pair grew up in the same Worcester neighborhood and actually began courting as teenagers. In 1945 they exchanged wedding vows at local Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Together they raised three sons - Lawrence Jr., Richard and Mark.

Grafton remembers its war dead on Memorial Day 2015

Grafton - Several thousand people turned out on May 25 to celebrate Memorial Day in Grafton Center. The parade included hundreds of veterans, volunteers, scouts, and town residents.
