Algonquin students learn the realities of drinking and driving

Northborough/ Southborough - Three Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) juniors were looking forward to a summer hanging out with their friends and then senior year before heading off to college and a lifetime of adult responsibilities. But one bad decision – to drink and drive - has left one facing criminal charges, one paralyzed and another dead. Fortunately for the three students - Bobby Campbell, Brennan Burns and Taylor O'Connell - and their families and friends, the above is not a true story. Rather the three were part of a re-enactment in the ARHS parking lot today that showcased the ramifications of what might happen if an inexperienced young driver gets behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.

Westborough church prepares for fifth annual give-away

Westborough - When the former pastor of Chapel of the Cross Tom Sparling, challenged the congregation with the question, "Would our community miss us if we ceased to exist?," church member Sandra West took the question heart. In response, she organized the church's first Community Give-Away in 2008. "I believe God gave me the idea to do this give-away based on Pastor Tom's question," West said. "I presented the idea to my Monday night Women's Bible study group and we ran with it." The first year of the give-away, West and her band of 13 volunteers collected, organized and folded mounds of clothes to be given away. With monetary contributions from Wal-Mart in Framingham and Roche Brothers they also purchased diapers, wipes and laundry detergent, which were also given to the families who attended the event. The first year, 30 families benefited from the give-away. Each year since, the numbers have increased, with 145 families receiving free clothing and toiletries in 2011.

‘Burning issue’ – should Westborough build new Fire Station?

Westborough – Fire Department Captain Phil Kittredge acknowledges that to look at the outside of the town's Fire Station one might not see the immediate need for a replacement station to be built as soon as possible. But once inside, with its cramped quarters, water damage and numerous code violations, it is readily apparent, he said, that the station, built in 1886, has outlived its usefulness. The town's voters must decide that question for themselves on Tuesday, May 15 when they go to the polls to vote on a Proposition 2 ½ debt exclusion that would allocate $11 million for a new Fire Station that would be built on land right next to the existing one on Milk Street. The station held an Open House on May 5 (with another scheduled for May 12) as a way to garner support for the new project.
