Algonquin football advances to playoffs with win over Worcester North

Northborough - The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks football team defeated the Worcester North Polar Bears 22-16 in a game played Oct. 24. With the victory, the Tomahawks will advance to the playoffs for the first time since 1987.

Costumes on parade in Southborough

Southborough – Windy conditions Oct. 26 caused costumed kids to hold onto their hats while participating in the annual Halloween Parade, a longtime tradition presented by the Southborough Firefighters Association. Escorted by Fire Engine 22, lots of families travelled along Main Street for several blocks.

Algonquin over Quabbin 1-0 in field hockey

Northborough - The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks handed the Quabbin Regional High School Lady Panthers their first loss of the season in a 1-0 non-league field hockey game played Oct. 21. The number six-seeded Tomahawks are now 13-1-3 on the season (6-1-3 Midland A), while the number four-seeded Lady Panthers are now 12-1-3 (10-0-2 Midland B). Junior Juliet Chapin scored the goal for Algonquin in the first half.

Apple Tree Arts presents free Halloween music festival

Region - Apple Tree Arts will host the third annual “Spooky Halloween Music Festival” Sunday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Grafton Middle School, 22 Providence Road. The festival will feature an open rehearsal and performance of Claflin Hill Youth Symphonies (CHYS), Halloween games, and an “instrument petting zoo,” allowing residents to try orchestra instruments provided by Robinson Music of Westborough. The event is free and the public is welcome. “The music festival is a great way for Apple Tree Arts to showcase the talented musicians of the Claflin Hill Youth Symphonies,” said Donna Blanchard, executive director of Apple Tree Arts. “These highly, disciplined musicians are an inspiration for our school’s students. To truly appreciate how hard these young symphony musicians practice and dedicate themselves, students must see them in a live performance.”

Outdoor classroom dedicated to former superintendent

Southborough - Dr. Charles Gobron will inspire Albert S. Woodward Memorial School students outdoors, as he did in the classroom and school district for more than 40 years. A new outdoor classroom was dedicated at Woodward Oct. 6, in a ceremony attended by school officials, staff, community members and members of Gobron’s family.

They are even on the specially designed pink t-shirts of the 14 McCarthy’s Landscaping and Irrigation employees. The team has a very special reason to be proudly wearing pink this October – they are honoring the company’s co-owner Sue McCarthy, who is a breast cancer survivor.

Westborough art teacher finds inspiration in illness

Westborough – Westborough resident Linda Crawford has looked at enough black shoes to last a lifetime. “I’m so tired of black shoes,” she laughed. She not only looked at them, she painted them – and shoes of other colors as well - as part of an art project she undertook shortly after she learned she had breast cancer.

Vigil held to remember lives lost to domestic violence

Shrewsbury - A candlelight vigil held on Shrewsbury Common Oct. 15 for domestic violence victims and survivors drew record participation. And while domestic violence deaths in Massachusetts are down considerably since 2010, “I think when people start making it their own issue, that’s when we’re going to see meaningful change,” said Julie Ingersoll, a member of the Against Domestic Violence in Shrewsbury Education (ADVISE) project.

Couple exchanges vows – twice in one day

For Phil and Susan Sheridan, there was a compelling reason not to wait years later but instead to say “I do” once again just a mere few hours after the first time they officially became husband and wife. On the afternoon of Sept. 14 at St. John’s Church in Worcester the former Susan Slavinskas and Phil Sheridan exchanged vows before an audience of family and friends.

Westborough High artist displays mural in Boston

Westborough – Michelle Stevens, a senior at Westborough High School (WHS), answered the call as one of only five artists selected to display a mural in the inaugural “Blank Canvas” of the fourth Boston Calling, a music festival held Sept. 5 to 7 at City Hall Plaza in Boston. “If everyone at the festival walked by my art once, that’s 45,000 people seeing it, so that’s pretty cool,” she said. “Another highlight was getting to go there free because I really like music.”

Shrewsbury Library moves to temporary new home

Shrewsbury - Moving the Shrewsbury Public Library to its new temporary new home is no small feat. Thousands of books have to be transported. All the computers and electronics have to be disconnected and then reconnected. Furniture, files and fixtures have to travel the 2.2 miles from 609 Main St., the center of town to south of Route 9 into the former early intervention preschool building behind the Irving A. Glavin Regional Center at 214 Lake St. The library staff and American Interfile and Relocations of Bayshore, N.Y., a professional library moving company, are hard at work to make the transition to a space less than half the current library’s size.
