Wayside presents awards on Senior Health and Fitness Day

Marlborough – In observance of National Senior Health and Fitness Day, a luncheon was served May 28 at Wayside Racquet and Swim Club with awards presented to deserving guests. The highlight was the announcement of the 18th annual George Fortin Fit for Life Award and the second annual Effie Ann Thompkins Community Service Award. Each of the award's namesake was in attendance. As is the custom, that morning began with the Al Kursonis Memorial Tennis Tournament. This year, three winners were recognized by Darren McLaughlin, general manager of Wayside.

Ocean State Job Lot makes another sizeable donation to Worcester County Food Bank

Shrewsbury - The Worcester County Food Bank (WCFB) received a 33,000-pound food drop off from Ocean State Job Lot (OSJL) and General Mills June 3. The donation is a part of OSJL's "Three Square Meals" program. According to company officials, the program provides food donations at important times throughout the year. As the program has grown, the company has become a leading food bank supporter throughout New England.

PENTA celebrates grand opening of new building

Westborough – Since it was built in 1790, the graceful Colonial building at 208 Turnpike Rd. (Route 9 East) has been a homestead and then a popular restaurant where scores of local families and businesses celebrated important events. The structure, which was formerly known as the 1790 House, has been vacant since the restaurant closed in 2012. Now it will serve as the headquarters for a different type of business – PENTA Communications, Inc.

Shrewsbury High School graduates 395 in 2014

Shrewsbury – Diplomas were presented to 395 graduates of the Class of 2014 at a ceremony May 29 at the Shrewsbury High School (SHS) Field House. Speakers included Superintendent Dr. Joseph Sawyer, SHS Principal Todd Bazydlo and School Committee Chair Dr. B. Dale Magee.

Hudson's young scientists meet President Obama at White House

Hudson – President Barack Obama's basketball skills might improve after meeting three eighth-graders from Hudson High School at the fourth White House Science Fair held May 27. Their project examined the science behind scoring the perfect basketball shot. It was one of 30 notable science projects from students nationwide.

In spite of challenges, Northborough resident achieves Boy Scouts highest honor

Northborough – Only 7 percent of Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, the organization's highest honor, and even fewer who have intellectual disabilities do so. Daniel Fitzgerald, 20, who is autistic, is among this elite group. A member of Northborough's Troop 101, he officially became an Eagle Scout April 22.

Retiring superintendent puts “kids first”

Westborough - The experienced mentor, the super superintendent, and the beloved principal, Mrs. Marianne O"Connor, is retiring this year. She, who has spent 22 whole years in the Westborough School District and 30 impressive years in education, is retiring. Leaving. In retirement, Mrs. O"Connor plans to spend more time with her family, her "94-year-young mother," and grandchildren in Newtown, Connecticut.

On heels of honors, ARHS thespians to present new play this week

Northborough/Southborough - At a red carpet event held May 18 Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) English teacher Tom Alera and the cast and crew of the school's December production, "Damn Yankees" received six High School Musical Theatre Awards (TAMY). The coveted awards were judged and granted by Mount Wachusett Community College's Theater at the Mount in Gardner. Damn Yankees" walked away with Best Playbill, Best Production Number ("Shoeless Joe"), Best Ensemble, Best Actress (Brittany Price), Best Choreographer and Best Director (Tom Alera).

Hudson honors fallen veterans

Hudson – Memorial Day was observed May 26 in downtown Hudson with a parade led by the Hudson Police Color Guard. In addition to military vehicles, the parade featured representatives from the town's veterans" organizations and Scout troops. Music was provided by the marching bands of Hudson High and Quinn Middle schools. A ceremony followed at Liberty Park with speakers including state Rep. Kate Hogan, D-Stow, and Selectman Fred Lucy.

Northborough pays tribute to fallen heroes

Northborough – On May 26, the Memorial Day parade made stops for ceremonies at four monuments in downtown Northborough. Participants included many members of the American Legion Vincent F. Picard Post 234 and guest veterans, town and state officials, and Scout troops. Music was provided by the Algonquin Regional High School Marching Band and Chamber Choir.

At ceremonies held at St. Luke's, Pine Grove Cemetery and Midland cemeteries, as well as in front of the war memorial at the Forbes Municipal Building (FMB), officials and residents alike remembered with words, music and prayer those who had made the ultimate sacrifice.

Northborough girls are “princesses” for a day

Northborough - The Northborough Education Foundation held its second annual Mother/Daughter Tea Party May 17 at Algonquin Regional High School. The room resembled Disney World with little girls dressed in their prettiest princess costumes alongside their mothers. After sipping on Shirley Temples and eating pink cupcakes, the "princesses" had an afternoon full of singing and dancing with "Princess Elsa and Princess Anna" from Disney's "Frozen." The event also included a raffle, activities, games and fun favors.

Celebrating a special friendship

The Westborough High School Junior Prom had extra significance for a group of students May 16 as it was also a time for them to bid farewell to a longtime friend. Grace Taylor (third from right), left, who grew up in Westborough, will soon be moving to Toronto, Canada with her family. She came back to celebrate with her friends at the prom which was held at Union Station in Worcester.
