On heels of honors, ARHS thespians to present new play this week

Northborough/Southborough - At a red carpet event held May 18 Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) English teacher Tom Alera and the cast and crew of the school's December production, "Damn Yankees" received six High School Musical Theatre Awards (TAMY). The coveted awards were judged and granted by Mount Wachusett Community College's Theater at the Mount in Gardner. Damn Yankees" walked away with Best Playbill, Best Production Number ("Shoeless Joe"), Best Ensemble, Best Actress (Brittany Price), Best Choreographer and Best Director (Tom Alera).

Hudson honors fallen veterans

Hudson – Memorial Day was observed May 26 in downtown Hudson with a parade led by the Hudson Police Color Guard. In addition to military vehicles, the parade featured representatives from the town's veterans" organizations and Scout troops. Music was provided by the marching bands of Hudson High and Quinn Middle schools. A ceremony followed at Liberty Park with speakers including state Rep. Kate Hogan, D-Stow, and Selectman Fred Lucy.

Northborough pays tribute to fallen heroes

Northborough – On May 26, the Memorial Day parade made stops for ceremonies at four monuments in downtown Northborough. Participants included many members of the American Legion Vincent F. Picard Post 234 and guest veterans, town and state officials, and Scout troops. Music was provided by the Algonquin Regional High School Marching Band and Chamber Choir.

Westborough remembers its veterans

Westborough – Under cool, overcast skies hundreds of residents gathered to honor Westborough's veterans, past and present, during ceremonies held throughout the town Memorial Day, May 26. At ceremonies held at St. Luke's, Pine Grove Cemetery and Midland cemeteries, as well as in front of the war memorial at the Forbes Municipal Building (FMB), officials and residents alike remembered with words, music and prayer those who had made the ultimate sacrifice.

Marlborough youth honored for significant community service

Marlborough – After a few years" hiatus, the Marlborough Youth Commission revived its Youth Service Award, which was presented to six recipients at the start of the City Council's May 19 meeting at City Hall.

Northborough girls are “princesses” for a day

Northborough - The Northborough Education Foundation held its second annual Mother/Daughter Tea Party May 17 at Algonquin Regional High School. The room resembled Disney World with little girls dressed in their prettiest princess costumes alongside their mothers. After sipping on Shirley Temples and eating pink cupcakes, the "princesses" had an afternoon full of singing and dancing with "Princess Elsa and Princess Anna" from Disney's "Frozen." The event also included a raffle, activities, games and fun favors.

Celebrating a special friendship

The Westborough High School Junior Prom had extra significance for a group of students May 16 as it was also a time for them to bid farewell to a longtime friend. Grace Taylor (third from right), left, who grew up in Westborough, will soon be moving to Toronto, Canada with her family. She came back to celebrate with her friends at the prom which was held at Union Station in Worcester.

PENTA hosts flag raising ceremony

Westborough - PENTA Communications, Inc. brought Memorial Day spirit to life by hosting a flag raising ceremony to honor local Westborough veterans May 22, at its new location at 208 Turnpike Rd. Several active members of the Westborough Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Memorial Post 9013 raised the flag, as students from the Westborough High School Marching Band played the Star Spangled Banner.

Corridor Nine annual meeting features “Fedoras and Flappers”

Region – "Fedoras and Flappers" was the theme of the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce's Ultimate Networking and Oscar Awards Breakfast held at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club May 15. Corridor Nine embraced the "Roaring Twenties" with nearly 200 members and guests in attendance. The event was sponsored by Avidia Bank, Middlesex Savings Bank, Sigma7 Group and Mirick O"Connell.

Getting ready for next winter

Northborough - Longtime Northborough resident Larry Cotter, 77, has been heating his house with wood for over 35 years. However, the wood isn's ready to be used to heat his home upon delivery. Each spring Cotter gets a delivery of about 50 tree trunks. These trunks must be cut into small logs that can then be split into usable firewood. He uses a chainsaw to cut the trunks and an axe to split the wood.

Good sports vie for Mr. WHS crown

Westborough – Ten senior boys good-naturedly competed in categories including beach and formal wear, dance, talent, interview and movie montage at the fourth annual Mr. WHS fundraiser, presented May 15 at the Westborough High School auditorium.

St. John's defeats Algonquin in boys” lacrosse

Shrewsbury - The St. John's High School Pioneers hosted the Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks for a boys' lacrosse game May 17.

Local jazz students perform at Hatch Shell in Boston

Region – Jazz students from Marlborough High School (MHS) and Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) added an impressive credit to their resumes when they performed May 4 at the Hatch Shell on the Boston Esplanade. The invitation was extended after an ensemble from each school earned a Gold Medal rating at both the district and state big band festivals presented by the Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education (MAJE). Joining them was the MHS Small Jazz Combo who received a Gold Medal rating at the MAJE state combo/choir festival.

Hudson High class of “49 reunites for 65th anniversary

Hudson – Members of the Hudson High School (HHS) class of 1949 gathered May 3 at Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury to celebrate their 65th reunion. They reunite at least every five years thanks to a committee chaired by Barbara (Lenox) Masciarelli, who was the senior class secretary. "I'se had a list of all the classmates ever since we started doing this," she said. "People contact myself or somebody else who's in Hudson with updates if they move."

WHS girls” tennis team receives MIAA award

Westborough - The Westborough High School girls tennis" team received the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Athletic Achievement award May 12.

Marlborough native raises stroke awareness with Tedy's Team

Marlborough – Marlborough native Katie Jerdee has much in common with former New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi. They'se both athletes who suffered a stroke at an early age and were treated at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. More recently, they both ran April 28 in the Boston Marathon with Tedy's Team to raise awareness and funds. "Being able to see someone like Tedy as an example has meant a lot in my recovery," Jerdee said. "I hope to be that way to other people who, unfortunately, go through a stroke."
