Marlborough couple advocates for abandoned babies

Marlborough - Mike and Jean Morrisey have been through the heartache of losing a baby from a miscarriage. So when they got a chance call from the state medical examiner's about an abandoned baby, they knew they had to do something. "We were known throughout the state for our fight against the hospital where my wife had a miscarriage," said Mike Morrisey. So when a baby was found dead in 2011, officials contacted the Morrisseys. "They said we would know someone who could help keep the baby from being buried in Potter's Field," Mike said, of the areas in cemeteries where indigent or those whose identities are not known are buried.

Mill Pond School teacher to run marathon for former student

Westborough/Shrewsbury - Ashley Orlando-Lohnes, 29, is a fourth-grade special education teacher at the Mill Pond School. She lives in Shrewsbury with her husband, Adam, 29, and their six-week-old son, Carter. Both Ashley and Adam will be running the Boston Marathon Monday, April 21, in honor of Ashley's former student, Mark Kotosky.

Challenger League gives disabled kids a chance to play ball

Shrewsbury - Two years ago, Shrewsbury Little League Coach Chip Collins took onto his team Camden Chenevert, a child who has a severe form of autism. That choice has inspired Collins, and others, to form a league for local youths who share the same challenges and aspirations as Camden. The Challenger League is for players with intellectual or physical disabilities, and gives them a chance to play baseball, Collins explained.

Assabet Valley honors the life of beloved student and athlete

Region – Friends and family joined students and teammates Feb. 6 to posthumously induct Pablo Salcedo of Westborough into the National Honor Society (NHS) at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School (AVRTHS) in Marlborough. Salcedo was a senior majoring in health technologies and captain of the soccer team. He died Jan. 5 in an auto accident in Westborough. The school hosted the celebration of Salcedo's life on what would have been his 19th birthday. Members of the AVRTHS NHS gave examples of how Salcedo exemplified the pillars of an inductee: scholarship, leadership, service and character. Matt Silva deemed Salcedo a successful student who balanced his attention between classes and extracurricular activities.

Hart Center for a non-league game Feb. 9. Westborough family to host MS fundraiser

Westborough - Tom Smith grew up in Westborough with his brothers Paul and John and his sisters Mary (Cullen), Marguerite (Kerr), Sharrie (Grady) and Jean. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross, taught at the US Naval Academy (retiring as a commander) and then retired as the director of information technologies at the Mass Educational Financing Authority (MEFA). Tom was diagnosed with primary progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2006, a battle he lost in 2011. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, his daughters Heather, Heidi and Meagan, their spouses and his granddaughters.

Shrewsbury – Kristen Ward was happy to begin working as a secretary at Sherwood Middle School (SMS) in September 2011 because the hours fit perfectly around her sons" sports schedules. Two weeks later, her husband, Art, suffered a stroke. Now, Kristen is grateful for her co-workers as an important part of her family's support system. On Friday, February 7, from 6 to 9 p.m., SMS will host "A Heart for Art" to raise funds for a hydrotherapy pool for Art. Several months of aquatic therapy showed hopeful progress toward his goal of walking again. However, the facility with the pool has closed and their insurance no longer covers aquatic therapy.

The first period was a draw, ending at 0-0 as both teams battled evenly. In the opening minutes of the second period however, the Tomahawks' Ian Kosovsky scored (assist by Dylan Connelly). Women of Note will deliver singing valentines

Region – For those in search of a unique way to express their feelings to someone special, a quartet from Women of Note (WON) can deliver a singing valentine Friday, Feb. 14, or Saturday, Feb. 15, throughout central or eastern Massachusetts. The annual fundraiser benefits the nonprofit a cappella chorus, which is based in Hudson with 26 active members from 22 communities including Hudson, Marlborough, Northborough, Shrewsbury and Westborough.
