Senior class superlatives announced at Marlborough High

Marlborough – The Marlborough High School (MHS) class of 2014 followed the lead of last year's seniors and announced their superlatives in the fall instead of the spring, so that photos could get published in the yearbook. That schedule is expected to continue, according to class advisor Paula Ryder. "The kids have known each other for a long time, so they already know who they'se going to vote for in the fall," she said.

Local businesses ensure a happy Halloween for kids in need

Region – When Barbara Clifford, president of the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce, learned about the number of families living in temporary housing in several local motels, she felt compelled to help but didn's know where to start. But over the course of two days, thanks to the generosity of several local businesses, she helped to coordinate an outing for the approximately 30 children and their parents that made their Halloween a much happier one this year.

Corridor Nine launches annual food drive

Region – The Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce, along with the Doubletree Hotel, HYPE9 (young professionals group of Corridor Nine), member businesses, and local schools are joining forces again to collect food for those in need. In the true spirit of a community partnership, they are hoping to engage all businesses and residents to help fight local hunger. As such, they are asking businesses and schools to set up collection bins at their locations and to encourage employees, staff members, and parents/school children to make donations.

St. John's scored first on a 73-yard pass from Drew Smiley to Michael McGillicuddy (Jack Coveney made the point-after). Organ recipient and donor parents offer lifesaving message

Northborough/Shrewsbury – The marching units of the recent Spirit of Shrewsbury Fall Festival parade included over 40 volunteers of Donate Life New England. The group consisted of transplant recipients, donor families and others touched by donation. While their reasons for marching varied, they shared an understanding of the powerful message emblazoned on their T-shirts: "Donate Life."

Shrewsbury limousine company “going green”

Shrewsbury – Knight's Airport Limousine Service, headquartered at 390 Hartford Turnpike in Shrewsbury, is joining the "green" revolution, making an effort to reduce its energy use and lower its carbon emissions by converting the company's Ford E-350 vans to propane autogas. Knight's boasts a diversified fleet of over 50 vehicles, including Lincoln Town Cars, passenger vans, and mini-buses (accommodating 23 to 29 passengers) which log thousands of miles per week. With the inconsistent and often increasing cost of fuel, the management of Knight's began to research alternatives; ultimately leading them to ROUSH CleanTech, a division of Michigan- based ROUSH Enterprises.

Prayer for the silent: annual domestic violence vigil held in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury - A small crowd gathered on the lawn of Shrewsbury Town Common Oct. 16, lit candles, and said prayers for those who could not speak out for themselves, as a drum beat quietly but steadily. This was the third annual vigil honoring victims and survivors of domestic violence. The vigil was organized by the Against Domestic Violence in Shrewsbury Education project (ADVISE) and Saheli, an organization that supports South Asian women and families in Massachusetts.

Colonials defeat Rangers as Shrewsbury coach notches 100th career win

Westborough - The Westborough High School Rangers hosted the Shrewsbury High School Colonials for their "Tackle for Leukemia" football game on Oct. 19. Individuals fighting leukemia or who had lost their battle were honored with a special collection, raffle and recognition during half-time. The Colonials struck first, on a run by Nicholas Diliberto and point-after by Kristofer Swedberg for a 7-0 lead. The Colonials' Emmanuel Jalbert scored next, also on a run and Swedberg hit the point-after. The Rangers were able to get on the scoreboard with a field goal by Jack Churma (Kevin Sanders holding).

Volunteers bring hope to French Hill's guests of honor

Marlborough – Over 300 volunteers joined the Marlborough Convoy of Hope to host nearly 1,000 guests Oct. 12 at Stevens Park. Convoy of Hope is an international faith-based organization that unites with local volunteers from churches, businesses and nonprofit agencies to help those in need of assistance. Serving as the event organizer was Rob Woods, pastor of the New Hope Community Church.

Marlborough resident expands theater company's audience

Marlborough – Theater performers are commonly considered gypsies because they'sl travel nearly anywhere for a stage and an audience. For the first time, Moonstruck Theater Company will take the stage in Framingham at the Amazing Things Arts Center (ATAC) to present the musical "Little Shop of Horrors" for seven shows: Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 18, 19, 25 and 26, at 8 p.m.; and matinees Sundays, Oct. 20 and 27, and Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m.

Marlborough dedicates “Peace Garden” to former superintendent

Marlborough – When Stephen Dlott agreed to serve as the interim superintendent for the Marlborough Public Schools in August 2012 he was stepping into a district that had been through some strife and turmoil due to a dispute involving the former superintendent. Dlott, who has held leadership positions in other districts, was praised by school and city officials for his role in helping Marlborough transition during the past year until Richard Langlois took over the role in September.

Serving as moderator is Zorina Frey, author and owner of IWA Publishing Services, a self-publishing business. Frey recently moved to Westborough from Indiana and felt it would be a good opportunity to mingle with other local writers.
