Library carnival kicks off summer reading

Shrewsbury – Hundreds of children and their parents gathered at the Shrewsbury Public Library June 27, for the fourth annual carnival to kick off summer reading. The event featured games, face painting, live music, prizes, films and snacks. Special guests "Finz," the mascot for the Worcester Sharks, and "Flippo," the balloon performer, mingled throughout the crowd. More than a dozen local authors spoke with the children and autographed books.

Hudson – Danny Weaver of Hudson was raised by his grandparents, Donald and Jean Weaver, and to this day calls his 79-year-old grandfather the "greatest man and friend I have ever known." So when Donald fell ill, Danny and fiancée Paula Hatch-O"Loughlin moved up their wedding date from Aug. 10 in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, to June 29 at a church in Maynard.

Westborough teacher carries torch in final leg of One Run for Boston

Westborough – Armstrong Elementary School gym teacher and Westborough High School coach Ali Rheaume was one of the runners to carry the torch in the final leg of One Run for Boston, a 24-day, 3,300-mile relay across the U.S. to raise money for victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. The non-stop race began June 7 in Los Angeles and ended just after midnight July 1 in Boston. More than 1,000 runners from across the U.S. participated, carrying a lighted baton through 14 states. Along the way, runners endured thunderstorms, pouring rain, floods, and extreme heat just to keep the relay going.

Summer Drama Workshop celebrates 25 years with “A Blast from the Past”

Region – The idea of a few teachers and parents to share their love of musical theater with students became a summertime tradition that's still popular a quarter of a century later. The 25th anniversary of the Summer Drama Workshop was celebrated with "A Blast from the Past," presented June 29 at Hudson High School (HHS) Auditorium. The alumni revue featured over 50 original cast members recreating their tuneful highlights of 24 shows.
