St. John's triumphs in track meet

Shrewsbury - The 52nd annual "Fred Warren" District E Boys Class Track Meet was held May 11 at Shrewsbury High School. St. John's High School was the Class A winner with 101.60 points. Wachusett Regional High School was second with 87 points, and Algonquin Regional High School's 76 points gave them third place. Host Shrewsbury High School earned fourth place with 53.60 points; Westborough High School took seventh place with 34 points; and Marlborough High School was 13th with 8 points. In Class B, Hudson High School came in 12th place with 11 points.

Team 1100 Robotics wins Chairman's Award

Region- For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people to pursue higher education and careers in science, technology and engineering through hands-on mentorship from people in those fields. Algonquin's FIRST Team 1100 was founded in 2003. The current Team 1100 is led by parent, mentor and engineer Dan Strickland and advised by Applied Arts and Technology teacher George Clarke. While Algonquin's Team 1100 is based out of Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS), the team roster includes students from many surrounding towns.

For Shrewsbury photographer, work is love

Shrewsbury - According to Shrewsbury resident Stan Trzoniec, he is "one of the lucky ones who just knew what he wanted to do in life." Trzoniec is a writer, photographer and publisher with over 2,800 articles published in popular sporting, outdoors, photography, birding and railroad magazines (including "Shutterbug," "Outdoor Photographer," "Digital Photography Buyers Guide," "Birder's World," and InterMedia Outdoors publishing companies). He has published 10 books and has more than 850 magazine cover credits. Additionally, Trzoniec teaches photography workshops, has his own line of photographic greeting cards and exhibits fine art and landscape photographs at local art shows. His next show will be with the Deerfield Crafters at the Big E fairgrounds the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Community service helps inmates paint a brighter future

Northborough – As soon as the school year is over, Mike Gorman, the director of facilities for Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS), starts the lengthy, involved task of cleaning and taking care of tasks and repairs to prepare the school for the next year. Mindful of tight budgets, where just about every penny is spoken for, he and his staff must pick and choose what can be done and what must wait. But thanks to the Community Service program run by Worcester County Sheriff Lewis Evangelidis’s office, thousands of dollars of labor was recently performed, at no cost to the school, by minimum security inmates.

Northborough boy alerts authorities to fire

Northborough - An observant little boy is being credited, in part, with notifying authorities of a brush fire April 14 that spread over nearly seven acres before being contained. Aidan Callaghan, an 8-year-old second-grader at the Lincoln Street School was on the bus home when he noticed smoke coming from a wetlands area on Crawford Street. As soon as he got off, he ran into his house and told his mother, Jennifer.

Proctor Elementary hosts “Peace Pride Proctor” Spring Fair

Northborough- On March 3, Proctor Elementary School hosted its annual "Peace Pride Proctor," fair to the delight of many parents and their families. Families were treated to a colorful room filled with games, inflatable bouncy sport; prizes and delicious food and refreshments donated by local merchants. "This is our biggest fundraiser of the year," Proctor School Principal Margaret Donohue said. "We are so thankful for the generous donations from local merchants, Proctor families and friends."
