Dad and son to ride with “Bicycles Battling Cancer”

Region – Mohan John is discovering healthy lessons as a seventh-grader at Melican Middle School in Northborough. His favorite class is math, with science ranking a close second. He recently learned the facts and figures of cancer when a survivor visited his science class. "The experience he had to go through was not very good," Mohan said of the cancer survivor. "He went through all kinds of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Hearing him motivated me a lot."

Honoring the memories of mothers

Shrewsbury – Mother's Day is often a day filled with cards, gifts, flowers and other ways to make one's mom feel special. But for women whose mothers have passed away, the day can often be one that is filled with deep sadness and longing. For a group of local women, this year's Mother's Day was a bit easier as they gathered May 11 to reminisce about their mothers at a breakfast held at the First Congregational Church.

Public invited to participate in “Flags for Our Fallen”

Region – With Memorial Day just weeks away, many municipalities are planning commemorations and tributes. But now there is another way that citizens can help honor veterans, by purchasing small American flags that will be displayed as part of a large group of flags in either Shrewsbury or Worcester. The initiative, "Flags for Our Fallen," was started last year by Shrewsbury resident Amanda Sullivan. With the help of Liberty Church officials, she sold 1,500 flags leading up to Memorial Day, for $2 each, for a total of $3,000. Those flags were then displayed at the church's 495 Hartford Turnpike, Shrewsbury location and at the New England Dream Center (NEDC) in Worcester. All proceeds were donated to NEDC programs that support veteran initiatives such as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome support and workforce training.

Marlborough musician performs for his hometown

Marlborough- Local musician Jason Anick has played music all over the world and before a large variety of audiences. When he was 12 years old, he was performing in the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Fair fiddle contest when then-President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, unexpectedly joined the audience.

MHS students flaunt fashion at “Freaky Friday”

Marlborough – Students in Marlborough High School's (MHS) family and consumer science department classes hosted their annual fashion show and play May 2. The event was a way for the students to showcase the fashions they had made in their classes. Appetizers and desserts made by the culinary classes were served during the intermission.

Four-time cancer survivor prepares to walk three fundraisers

Marlborough – Marlborough resident Veronica "Vikki" Crowley has a family history of various types of cancer, which took the lives of her mother, sister, two aunts and a nephew. She's also a four-time cancer survivor still battling the disease. "I shouldn's be here, but I keep coming back," she said with a laugh. "I'se lived through four types of cancer. I don's understand why I's still here, unless it's to finish something I'se started."

St. John's triumphs in track meet

Shrewsbury - The 52nd annual "Fred Warren" District E Boys Class Track Meet was held May 11 at Shrewsbury High School. St. John's High School was the Class A winner with 101.60 points. Wachusett Regional High School was second with 87 points, and Algonquin Regional High School's 76 points gave them third place. Host Shrewsbury High School earned fourth place with 53.60 points; Westborough High School took seventh place with 34 points; and Marlborough High School was 13th with 8 points. In Class B, Hudson High School came in 12th place with 11 points.

Senior Songsters thank Jim and Linda Duncan for the memories

Southborough/Westborough – The Southborough Senior Songsters transported audiences on a musical trip down memory lane with "The "40s Hit Parade," presented April 26 and 28 at the Southborough Senior Center. Featuring 35 singers ages 60 to 91, the musical-comedy revue was produced and directed by Jim and Linda Duncan, of Westborough.

Second annual speech showcase honors Polito, students

Shrewsbury – The Shrewsbury High School (SHS) Speech and Debate Team hosted the second annual Evening Speech Showcase May 4 to highlight the team's talents through student performances. Awards were also presented during the event to Karyn E. Polito, a former selectman and state representative, as well as to four SHS students. "The football team, they'se on Shrewsbury Cable. A lot of people know about what they do, but not a lot of people know what the speech and debate team does," event co-organizer Robert Mahowald said.

Southborough mom is ‘flying high’

Southborough – For Sue Loverso, 48, a 2008 trip to the Trapeze School New York (TSNY) with Girl Scout Troop 72766 sparked an addiction to aerial acrobatics. "I participated with the girls and was completely hooked by the time I left class," said Loverso. "I went back a month later and it has been a part of my life ever since."

Marathon participants open Northborough's baseball and softball season

Northborough – The Northborough Baseball and Softball Association kicked off its 2013 season May 4 with the annual baseball parade. The opening day was dedicated to the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy. Six residents who ran in the marathon this year - Susan Willwerth, Keith Pellerin, Kristen McIsaac, Chris Benestad, Andy Cosgrove, and Meredith Kent - were invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Other opening day activities included a barbecue, hot air balloon rides, Whiffle ball tournament and a home run derby.
