Westborough - The Westborough High School Rangers girls" softball team played host to the North Middlesex Regional High School Patriots on April 13 at Westborough High School.

Shrewsbury - Shrewsbury High School (SHS) students and faculty gathered at the Shrewbury Towers April 13 to raise the spirits of the residents there who had their cars vandalized earlier this week. The school collected donations from students during their lunch period for this community service project and in one day raised $350.

Marlborough – Mayor Arthur Vigeant welcomed residents age 60 and over to the 37th annual Mayor's Senior of the Year Dinner, held April 10 at the Marlborough High School cafeteria. He said that after receiving names of several nominees, who needed to be at least age 90, his choice for the honoree was easy. "There are a lot of people in our senior community who do so much, but personally, I'se seen her firsthand volunteering all over the city – Frances Brescia, the Senior of the Year," Vigeant announced.

Southborough - As runners get in their final miles of training for the 117th Boston Marathon, which will take place Monday, April 15, one local runner has his sights set on a different prize. Jim Richardson will be lacing up his sneakers and taking to the pavement to participate in his fourth Boston Marathon. He runs not for the glory or the recognition. Rather, he runs on behalf of a friend's son who is battling neuroblastoma - a malignant cancerous tumor that develops from nerve tissue.

Shrewsbury – Dominique Hall, 17, a junior at Shrewsbury High School (SHS), reached her goal for the winter indoor track and field season, as she is now the All-State champion for the 300 meter.

Westborough - Rena Finder, who survived the Holocaust due to the efforts of Oskar Schindler, will talk about her experience at an event to be held at Westborough High School (WHS) Friday, April 26, at 7 p.m. The event will be sponsored by the Westborough Friends of Facing History and Ourselves Foundation (FHAO). Tickets will be available at the door.

Shrewsbury - Life with autism can be a roller coaster ride of exhilarating moments and sudden plunges into despair. Wayne and Kelly Carey have experienced all of this as they have learned to deal with autism, which affects their three sons. Although there is a wide spectrum of what is considered autistic behavior, many times it can often be characterized by difficulties with social interaction, communication, and imagination. Those who are autistic may have restricted and repetitive interests and behaviors. Younger children who have been diagnosed with autism often focus on parts of toys, such as the wheels on a car, or make long lines of pieces, rather than playing with the entire toy. Some people tend to "stim" (flap their hands), rock, and avoid eye contract. They may not be empathetic to others and may completely miss clues on what the general population may consider "normal" social behavior.

Shrewsbury - According to Shrewsbury resident Stan Trzoniec, he is "one of the lucky ones who just knew what he wanted to do in life." Trzoniec is a writer, photographer and publisher with over 2,800 articles published in popular sporting, outdoors, photography, birding and railroad magazines (including "Shutterbug," "Outdoor Photographer," "Digital Photography Buyers Guide," "Birder's World," and InterMedia Outdoors publishing companies). He has published 10 books and has more than 850 magazine cover credits. Additionally, Trzoniec teaches photography workshops, has his own line of photographic greeting cards and exhibits fine art and landscape photographs at local art shows. His next show will be with the Deerfield Crafters at the Big E fairgrounds the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Hopkinton - Federal, state and local officials joined John Hancock Financial representatives today at the Center School in Hopkinton to unveil the life-size statue honoring famed father and son, Dick and Rick Hoyt. The statue was commissioned by John Hancock and donated to the town of Hopkinton. The Hoyts are known for their annual participation in the Boston Marathon, among many other athletic endeavors. This year marks their 31st year participating in the marathon. Dick Hoyt has pushed his son, Rick, who is a quadriplegic and has cerebral palsy, through the finish line thirty times. They are known as "Team Hoyt", and they have become a local symbol of strength and inspiration in overcoming obstacles and adversity.

Northborough - The defending Central Massachusetts baseball champions and state finalist Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks hosted the Shepherd Hill Regional High School Rams for its home opener April 5 in Northborough. The Tomahawks scored one run in the second, but it wasn't until the bottom of the fourth that they then blew it open with a grand slam by Jack Henningson who drove the ball over the center field fence at the 390 foot mark.

Marlborough - When Omar Vazquez and Erik Del Cid had their very first wrestling matches, things didn's go quite as planned. Both wound up losing, but they learned quickly from those early lessons. "The coaches didn't give up on me. They were always there to push and practice," Del Cid said. "I remember looking back at old pictures of my first year of wrestling, and how scrawny I was ? Technique was hard to get down, but once you start getting better and better, you feel like you can beat anybody."

Westborough – Each spring, Massachusetts residents know there is no surer sign of spring than the running of the Boston Marathon. Whether one is a sanctioned participant, running as a "bandit," cheering from the sidelines or just watching from the comfort of home, everyone, it seems, is inspired by the 26 miles-plus trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Southborough – John Megan has always loved to run, whether it was for exercise, a way to bond with his two young daughters as he pushed them in a stroller or for an important cause, such as running with the Dana Farber team during Boston Marathons. That was particularly meaningful, he said, because he ran in memory of his mother, who died of heart cancer in 1995.

Westborough – The downtown shop at 8 West Main St. has been the home of Westboro Gallery for 15 years. At its monthly meeting Feb. 21, the 22 members of the artists" cooperative discussed options to resolve recent financial struggles, but then they unanimously voted to close after hosting a final reception March 23.

Shrewsbury - The Shrewsbury High School Colonials boys' lacrosse team hosted the Westborough High School Rangers on April 4 in Shrewsbury. The Colonials built a commanding lead early, and led 6-0 after the first half. The Rangers finally got on the board twice at the end of the third period, but were still down 9-2.

Northborough - Community volunteers and members of the Northboro Junior Woman's Club planted an unusual garden March 30 at Town Hall. A thousand pinwheels were plunked into the soil, each one representing a donation to Massachusetts Citizens for Children. As a whole, the garden of spinning, flashing blue "Pinwheels For Prevention" will bring awareness to National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April. According to Lori Hagen, treasurer or the Northborough Junior Woman's Club, which spearheaded the fundraiser, almost $1,000 was raised for Citizens for Children, exceeding last's year's amount by about $250.

Northborough/Southborough - While the right to a free and compulsory primary education without discrimination is recognized as a fundamental human right here in the United States, millions of girls around the world do not have access to education. Last year, believing that the basic human right to an education is worth fighting for, a group of dedicated students at Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) started a local chapter of Girls Learn International (GLI).

Region – Preparation to enroll eligible residents of central Massachusetts as participants in the Cancer Prevention Study?3 (CPS-3) was discussed at a March 26 press conference at Worcester City Hall. Among the five sites hosting enrollment is the Boroughs Family Branch YMCA in Westborough, which serves nine communities including Hudson, Marlborough, Northborough, Shrewsbury, Southborough and Westborough. Non-members are welcomed to enroll in CPS-3. Enrollment will also be available at three locations in Worcester and one in Fitchburg.
