“Hope for the Holidays” returns in Marlborough

0
Marlborough – For the second year, the United Way of Tri-County is offering its "Hope for the Holidays" program in Marlborough to help brighten the season for families in need of assistance. Previously, the city's Human Services Department organized a similar program for many years known as "Holiday Helpers." Barbara LaGrenade, the director of volunteerism at the United Way of Tri-County and the office coordinator at the Marlborough Community Cupboard, said the transition of the holiday programs has gone smoothly.

“Festival of Trees” continues growing in fifth year

0
Marlborough – An idea introduced in 2008 added 17 decorated trees to the Marlborough Historical Society's annual "Christmas at the Farm" at their quaint headquarters, the Peter Rice Homestead. That simple idea has grown to become this year's fifth annual "Metrowest Festival of Trees," now featuring over 100 trees and wreaths displayed along with other attractions at the 47,500-square-foot Best Western Royal Plaza Trade Center. Festivities are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 7, 5 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 9, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A stranger's kindness helps keeps the Christmas spirit alive in Hudson

2
Hudson – It is easy to get jaded by the holidays each year, especially when stores barely get the Halloween candy off the shelves before the Christmas items take their place. But every so often, there is a story that reminds you it doesn's really matter what you celebrate this time of year whether it is Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, the winter solstice or just winter. Because deep down, we know material items don's really matter. It's the people in our lives that are important. Recently members of the Hudson Lodge of Elks 959 shared a story that stresses that point. It seems like an old-fashioned Hollywood tale but Elks member Angela Govatsos ensures that it is 100 percent true.

Westborough volunteers come together to help Gingras family

1
Westborough – A Westborough family has gotten an early holiday gift thanks to volunteers from two local churches and a local foundation – a ramp that will allow them easier access in and out of their Steven Road home. In June 2011 Jim Gingras Jr. was in a devastating motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Over the course of two weekends in November, volunteers from the Congregational Church of Westborough and St. Luke's Parish met at the Gingras home to construct a handicap-accessible ramp.

Program spreads holiday cheer to Northborough seniors

0
Northborough – It's beginning to look a lot like the holiday season with decorated trees displayed at storefronts. A uniquely decorated tree is once again attracting attention at the Northborough branch of Central One Federal Credit Union. The ornaments are tags on which gift requests are printed for seniors who otherwise might not be remembered with a present. For about 12 years, the Northborough office of Home Instead Senior Care, in conjunction with the Northborough Council on Aging, has organized the "Be a Santa to a Senior" program. Initially, the holiday tree was set up at various retail stores. Over the past several years, it has been displayed at the credit union.

Giving thanks at Westborough High School

Westborough – If the Westborough High School community thought that perhaps they had the calendars mixed up and Thanksgiving was actually Nov. 16 this year, instead of Nov. 22, they could certainly be forgiven. On the 16th, the delicious aroma of turkey, vegetable dishes and pies was wafting through the air, courtesy of the Life Skills class. Each of the students in the Life Skills class has a different learning issue; the class is designed to teach basic skills so the participants can secure employment and live independently. As part of that initiative, they learn simple kitchen tasks including food preparation.
