Northborough - After attending Loyola University for two years, 2010 Algonquin Regional High School graduate Daniel Polanowicz decided to forgo another year at the traditional college. Instead, he decided that being an officer in the military was his calling, and that West Point was the best place to pursue his goal. He gained admission to the elite academy, one of the most prestigious educational establishments in the nation, which boasts astronauts, generals, business leaders and even U.S. presidents as graduates. The United States Military Academy at West Point ranks fourth in the nation for its production of Rhodes scholars, so by any standard, it is a significant accomplishment to gain acceptance to the school.

Region - Margaret Cedrone grew up in Westborough, leaving in 1998 and ultimately landing in North Grafton. Even though she has moved away, Cedrone said that Westborough will always be her home. Her family, the Ayres, have called the town home for eight generations. Cedrone, 58, is a senior finance manager for Genzyme Corporation.

Westborough Players” Club celebrates 75th season

Westborough – It would be an understatement to say the Westborough Players" Club (WPC) has a longstanding history. Currently in its 75th season, the community theater group is preparing its 153rd production: the musical "Working." The show will be presented at the Willows at Westborough two weekends: Fridays and Saturdays, Aug. 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays, Aug. 19 and 26 at 2 p.m. Serving as the show's director and board president, Brian Higgins said he's honored to be involved with the club's landmark 75th season.

Westborough youth group to build homes in Mexico

Westborough - On July 30, after months of fundraising and planning, a group of 31 students and leaders from Chapel of the Cross arrived in Ensenada, Mexico. The mission of this Student Ministries Mission Trip is to build two houses with Homes of Hope, a Christian organization with a vision to meet the needs and change the lives of others. The group will also help to further along the daycare/orphanage project that they worked on last summer and participate in local outreach using dramas, music and dancing. For Director of Student Ministries Bethany Needham, this trip holds personal significance.

Westborough teen is a powerful advocate for autism research

Westborough – Although she did not win the top prize in the national competition of the Prudential Spirit of Community awards this past spring, Rebecca Ackerman is not disappointed. Quite to the contrary, she was thrilled at the opportunity, she said, to meet so many other young people who, like her, are inspired to make a positive change in the world. In March, she was named as one of the two Massachusetts honorees for the Prudential awards. Rebecca, who will be entering her senior year at Westborough High School this fall, was honored for her work as an advocate for autism awareness and research. She has a very personal reason that she is so passionate about this cause – her twin brother, David, is autistic.

Creating “Fresh Air” family vacation memories

Marlborough – It's always an afternoon filled with anticipation when host families volunteering with the Friendly Town program of the Fresh Air Fund wait at the Marlborough Moose Lodge for buses to arrive from New York City. This year, about 65 families from throughout the Metrowest area were there July 20 to pick up guests ranging in age from 6 to 18.

Kidfest, an end of the summer celebration, offered a variety of activities for kids and their families: jump houses, pitch "n" splash, an inflatable obstacle course, puppet shows, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, face painting, spin art, tattoos, reptiles from Curious Creatures and more.
