Shrewsbury's Paton School gets new playground

Shrewsbury - The empty area that once held a playground at the Paton Elementary School in Shrewsbury is now full again and will soon be filled with children swinging, climbing and having fun. It was a little more than a year ago, in April 2011, when school officials learned the old playground structure, which included swings, slides and climbing areas, had to be taken down. A safety inspection revealed it was no longer secure for students to use. The structure was 15 years old, which is the typical lifespan of playground equipment.

River's Edge Players working musically “9 to 5”

Set in 1979, the musical comedy tells the story of three unappreciated secretaries who conspire to take control of their company. Even in a male-dominated office bullpen, these strong-minded women discover there's nothing they can's accomplish.

Southborough Open Land Foundation offers butterfly walk

Southborough - The Southborough Open Land Foundation (SOLF) invites the public to join husband and wife team, Barbara Volke and Stephen Moore, president of the Massachusetts Butterfly Club, for a butterfly walk at the Elaine and Philip Beals Preserve Sunday, July 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event marks the second butterfly walk hosted by the SOLF. Visitors will have the opportunity to spot a variety of butterflies, or "dancing flowers"; among them, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Viceroys, Monarch, Long-Dash Skipper or Appalachian Brown butterflies.

Marlborough/Hudson - When the biannual Good Scout Award Dinner was held June 19 at the Marlborough Courtyard by Marriott, two of the most familiar names in their communities were honored: Bob Kays, of Marlborough, and Rosemary Rimkus, of Hudson. Presented by the Boy Scouts" Knox Trail Council, the award recognizes individuals who exhibit the characteristics of Scouting in their daily lives. Project Smile seeks volunteers and donations to help traumatized kids

Region - For a child, a situation such as an accident, fire, serious illness or domestic violence, can, of course, be extremely traumatic. And often times, when a police officer or firefighter responds to that situation, the child's level of fright and stress increases. But thanks to a nonprofit Hopedale-based group, Project Smile, many emergency responders across the state now have another comforting way to help those kids - a gently used stuffed animal. And sometimes that can make all the difference in how the child gets through the event.

Shrewsbury woman honors fallen vets with memorial flags

Shrewsbury - Shrewsbury resident Amanda Sullivan knows how to get things done. Last year, the just 24-year-old Early Childhood Children's Director at Liberty Church launched a campaign that asked people to send Christmas cards to U.S. troops in service. The initial goal was 10,000 cards mailed - she ended up with over 87,000 sent. With that success under her belt, Sullivan decided to spearhead an effort to honor not just those troops serving their country now, but those who have lost their lives in service to their country. That's where Flags for Our Fallen comes in.
