There are two significant anniversaries regarding traveling into space today. In 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin became the first human being to travel into space as well as becoming the first to orbit the planet.
Two decades later, the space shuttle Columbia became the first reusable manned spacecraft to travel into space. After taking off from Cape Canaveral, it traveled 54 hours before touching down at California's Edwards Air Force Base on April 14.
