It's almost time for the 11th Westborough Spring Festival

Westborough – Plans are now being finalized for the 11th Annual Westborough Spring Festival, which will be held Friday, May 3, through Sunday, May 5. The festival is hosted by the Rotary Club of Westborough, but Co-Chairs Carol Burtt Borglund and Betsy Moquin said it has become an event that "truly involves residents, organizations and businesses from all sectors of the town."

New associate member appointed to Westborough Conservation Commission

Westborough – The Board of Selectmen appointed Kathleen Theoharides to a one-year term as an associate member of the Conservation Commission during its April 23 meeting. Requested for appointment by Conservation Commission Chairman Andrew Koenigsberg, Theoharides will serve a term ending June 30, 2014 as an associate member, meaning she be a non-voting member of the commission.

Masons offer immediate help for children in need

Westborough – Shoppers found bargains recently when the Siloam Lodge of Masons hosted its 13th annual Snowbound Yard Sale to benefit the Masonic Angel Fund. The benefiting charity provides immediate assistance to children in need who don's fit the criteria for the usual social service programs. Locally, the project helps children in Westborough, Northborough and Upton.

Planning Board member resigns after seven-year service

Westborough - Planning Board member Trevor Beauregard has resigned after serving seven years on the board, the selectmen announced during their April 9 meeting.

Selectmen discuss potential electronic voting for future town meetings

Westborough – The Board of Selectmen unanimously decided to create an electronic voting subcommittee during its April 9 meeting, in an effort to learn more about the possibility of having such a system in place as soon as Town Meeting in October.

Kittredge continues to serve Westborough

Westborough – Phil Kittredge is a Renaissance man of sorts. A recently retired longtime member of the Westborough Fire Department, he is also an amateur historian, who has collected - and donated – numerous photos and other items to various town groups and departments. But as committed as he has been to those endeavors, there is another area that really touches his heart, he said – serving as the president of the Westborough Food Pantry.

Cancer prevention study to be conducted in central Massachusetts

Region – Preparation to enroll eligible residents of central Massachusetts as participants in the Cancer Prevention Study?3 (CPS-3) was discussed at a March 26 press conference at Worcester City Hall. Among the five sites hosting enrollment is the Boroughs Family Branch YMCA in Westborough, which serves nine communities including Hudson, Marlborough, Northborough, Shrewsbury, Southborough and Westborough. Non-members are welcomed to enroll in CPS-3. Enrollment will also be available at three locations in Worcester and one in Fitchburg.

Selectmen discuss text messages sent during ATM

Westborough – The Board of Selectmen discussed during its March 26 meeting a text message that was sent to residents en masse during Annual Town Meeting (ATM) on March 16, urging voters to attend only for a vote on the school budget and then leave. Described by Advisory Finance Committee Chairman Edward Behn as "gaming the system," the text message tipped off voters as to the precise time when the school budget was being voted on, spurring many residents to show up just in time for the vote, only to leave immediately afterwards.

Westborough Town Meeting votes for $42.7 million school budget

Westborough – Voters approved the School Committee's $42.7 million school budget proposal for fiscal year (FY) 2014 at Annual Town Meeting (ATM) March 16. The approved school budget – which reflects a 3.1 percent increase over the current fiscal year's budget - was the highest of three different proposals offered during ATM. The Advisory Finance Committee (AFC) recommended a $42.5 million school budget, or a 3 percent increase, and resident Dominic Caprioli recommended a $42 million school budget, or roughly 2 percent increase over the current fiscal year.

Town votes for multi-million dollar Town Hall renovation project

Westborough – Voters at Annual Town Meeting March 16 approved a $7.3 million renovation project for the Town Hall. Requested by the Municipal Building Committee (MBC), the project aims to make major renovations to the Town Hall building, located at 34 West Main St. These renovations include the restoration of the clock tower, installation of an elevator in the building, replacing the windows and heating components and removing mold and asbestos, among other things. The project was also supported unanimously by the Board of Selectmen.
