Westborough to test smart phone app

Westborough – Westborough will soon be one of 36 Massachusetts communities who will be testing a new smart phone app designed to help implement or improve municipal services. Town Manager Jim Malloy told the Board of Selectmen at its Dec. 17 meeting that Westborough and 34 other communities will be "piggy-backing" onto a grant that the city of Boston won from the state's Community Innovation Challenge program.

Westborough selectmen approve delay of medical marijuana law

Westborough – Although the state's voters approved a ballot question in November that would allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes, many municipal officials believe there is still a lot of ambiguity regarding the exact details of how that will ruling will be implemented. The Westborough Board of Selectmen and Planning Board are among those officials. As a result, the selectmen approved at its Dec. 17 meeting a measure to delay the implementation of this new law for at least six months. As the law is currently written, some portions of it go into effect Jan. 1. Other parts are not as clear – but they must be in place by April 1. Westborough woman helps to empower women

Westborough – When Westborough resident Alisa Stone realized that there were no immediate options for women who were interested in self-defense or safety training, she felt compelled to change that. Stone has worked to provide an opportunity for high-school-aged women and older to learn to protect themselves. Stone was mugged 15 years ago, and her desire to set up safety training programs stemmed from that incident.

Westborough to save $792,000 with new electricity contract

Westborough – A new contract with the TransCanada Corporation will save the town of Westborough just over $792,000 in services related to electricity starting in fiscal year (FY) 2014.
