From Slavery to Civil Rights Zoom program with Shrewsbury Library
January 27 @ 7:00 pm
Shrewsbury – On Thursday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. via Zoom, the Shrewsbury Public Library will present musician/educator Roger Tincknell’s virtual one-hour program exploring African-American history through music. Please register to attend HERE.
The concert will begin with African drumming and a welcoming song in Swahili, then continue chronologically with slave songs, spirituals, work songs, and blues, concluding with songs from the 1960s Civil Rights movement. Stories, poems, and songs about Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and others will be woven into the rich musical fabric on which the program is based. Examples of some uniquely African-American musical styles such as R&B, Motown, and jazz will be included.
The audience will be invited to sing, move, dance, and play percussion instruments. A Q &A period will follow the program.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Shrewsbury Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
