MARLBOROUGH: July events at Marlborough Library

July 6, 2018

Marlborough – The Marlborough Public Library, 35 W. Main St., will offer free upcoming special events for adults, teens and kids.

Adult events

On Tuesday, July 10, at 6:30 p.m., there will be an author talk with Joe Bebo, author of “In the Back of the Van: The Story of One Unforgettable Summer.” From the band’s first job on the Cape where they almost got arrested, to the famed Boston Tea Party gig, this book puts you on stage with the author as he plays drums behind Van Morrison.

Fermented Vegetables 101, on Thursday, July 12, at 6:30 p.m., gives a hands-on introduction to vegetable fermentation with Mark Phillips of Hosta Hill. Participants will receive an introductory overview of the vegetable fermentation process and leave with a functional understanding of how to replicate the process in their kitchens at home. Registration is required.

Teen events

In Teen Tech Basics, participants will learn about arrays, loops, and data types, and how these concepts apply to all programming languages (starting with Java). This will be a small, hands-on learning experience taught by a fellow teen. This program is best for ages 11-16 and pre-registration is required. The class will meet Monday, July 9, to Thursday, July 12, from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. When registering, indicate whether you will bring your own device or you will be using one of the library’s.

On Thursday, July 12, from 2-3:30 p.m., local manga, anime, and graphic novel enthusiast, Robin Brenner, will lead teens into the world of Japanese manga and anime and share top picks for fans of all ages. If you’re a longtime fan or just curious about this growing pop culture trend, please join us for this Manga and Anime Workshop. No registration required.

On Friday, July 20, from 2-3 p.m., Mink the Satyr (in costume, of course) will teach you Cosplay 101, answer all your questions, and end her presentation with a costume-making demonstration. No registration required.

Come to ArtLab Friday, July 13, from 2-3:30 p.m. and paint a trio of tiny canvases. The Lazy Crafternoon series continues throughout the summer. On Wednesday, July 11, from 1:30-3 p.m., make some CD scratch art, and on Tuesday, July 31, from 2-3:30 p.m., make an artificial cactus out of painted rocks. Registration is required for these programs.

Children’s events

A LEGO Lunch will be held every Monday and Wednesday at 1 p.m. from through August 22 (except for Wednesday, July 4). Stop by and play with the library’s enormous LEGO collection. Children (ages birth to 18) are welcome to receive a free lunch, which is provided by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, with support from the Child Nutrition Outreach Program. Food will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mother Goose on the Loose will be held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. with stories, songs, rhymes and movement. At 10:30 a.m., there will be a playtime for babies & caregivers. No registration is necessary.

On Friday, July 6, at 2 p.m., the library will be showing Disney’s “Anastasia” (Rated G). This animated musical tale is about a princess from Russia’s Romanoff family, who survives assassination and flees to Austria. Feel free to sing along! All ages are welcome. Snacks will be provided.
