Northborough – Town Administrator John Coderre reported at the Sept. 25 Board of Selectmen meeting that the purchase of White Cliffs is almost complete.

Northborough - Daniel Wesson’s mansion required a significant quantity of water for the indoor plumbing, gardens, ponds and fountains.

Northborough – The town’s purchase of White Cliffs was due to happen by the end of September but has been delayed until at least mid-October, due the discovery of an underground oil tank on the property.

Northborough - Many people may not realize that in addition to Daniel Wesson’s “White Cliffs” mansion, he also built housing for his employees, a large green house and barns. These were all located across Main Street from the mansion. The greenhouse was located at the corner of Main and Walnut Streets where the Central One Federal Credit Union is located today. Three of his employees’ buildings still remain.

Northborough—White Cliffs has been spared from the wrecking ball after Town Meeting voters working past midnight approved spending $2.4 million in Community Preservation funds to purchase and permanently preserve the iconic mansion property. After more than a half hour of discussion at the April 26 TM, the White Cliffs proposal garnered more than the two-thirds vote it required, sparking a round of applause from the 200-plus voters who spent nearly five hours working its way through the warrant.

Northborough- Daniel Wesson’s summer mansion in Northborough included beautiful landscaping. His estate along Main Street contained about 30 acres.

Northborough - Built in the late 1880s, the White Cliffs mansion is a “Shingle Style” architectural masterpiece. The website www.wentworthstudio.com gives a very good review of this architectural style and was used as a reference for this article. This style was developed in New England between 1880 and 1900. It borrowed liberally from other Victorian styles. Architects handled proportion and details as if they were sculptural compositions. Exterior design elements include wood construction built atop first floors made of stone. Porches, balconies, and large windows encouraged an interaction with the out-of-doors. The design promoted informality and eclecticism as a clear expression of American individualism.

Northborough - An anonymous donor stepped forward March 28 to provide the town with the $5,000 the current owners of White Cliffs have asked for to bridge the time before voters can decide at the April 25 Town Meeting (TM ) whether to spend $2.4 million to buy and preserve the property.

Northborough – The Community Preservation Committee (CPC) voted March 21 to give its support to a measure that would see the town purchase the White Cliffs property on West Main Street for $1.75 million. The purchase would still need to be approved by the voters at the Annual Town Meeting which starts Monday, April 25.

Northborough - Mr. Daniel B. Wesson is known to be involved with the construction of over 13 buildings during his lifetime. Considering he grew up in a humble home with 10 siblings in Worcester Massachusetts, it is interesting to see his interest in the building of large elaborate homes.
